Barbara L. Dehais, 89 of Portland Maine and Glens Falls, NY died on Tuesday March 8, 2011 in Portland. She was born on July 13, 1921 in Montreal, PQ, Canada. She was the daughter of Allen A. and Helen Readio Lowe. She married Robert J. Dehais on September 12, 1948 and they were married for 41 years before his death in 1989. Mrs. Dehais graduated from Glens Falls (New York) High School in 1938 and from Oberlin College in 1943. After college she worked as a cryptanalyst for the U.S. Army Intelligence at Arlington Hall in Virginia. She also worked for several years as a teacher’s aide at Glens Falls High School.
A longtime member of the Church of the Messiah in Glens Falls, New York, she also attended St. Timothy’s Church in South Glens Falls for several years. She was a member of the Feeder Canal Alliance, the Adirondack Photography Club and volunteered as a docent at Chapman Historical Museum. For several years the Dehais family lived in Waterville, ME where Mrs. Dehais was an active member of St. Mark’s church and the Parents and Friends of Coburn Classical Institute. In retirement she attended a number of Elderhostel programs and was active in the Academy for Learning in Retirement in Saratoga Springs, New York and the Osher Life Long learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Dehais is predeceased by her sister Kathleen Lowe Smith of Boston Landing, New York and Austin, Texas. She is survived by her children Joseph and Connie of Portland, ME; William, and his wife Renita and two grandchildren Celia and Cameron of Cumberland Center, ME.
A funeral service will be held at a later date in the spring in Glens Falls, NY
