PORTLAND – Barbara Phyliss Libby, 97, of Portland died Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Fallbrook Woods in Portland. She was born June 23, 1925, in Portland. A daughter of Philip and Bessie Scribner, she lived in Portland her entire life and attended Portland schools.
The eldest of 11 children Barbara was a proud sister and loving caregiver to her younger siblings.
She married Newell Libby 1946, her soul mate and husband for 60 years before his passing in 2006. They were blessed with four wonderful children, Barbara, Beth, Newell III, Mark Sr. and seven beautiful grandchildren, Regan, Beth, Eric, Denette, Mark Jr., Jason and Jared as well as eleven amazing great-grandchildren, Aura, Mariah, Brandon, Wynn, Owen, Samuel, Ellis, Greta, Delsin, Milan and Satya.
She was very active in member of congregations at Preble Chapel and later First Parish Church where she taught Sunday School and brought blessings and positivity to everyone she met.
She worked for years at Shaw’s and later Bicknell Photo. But she was perhaps most proud of 18 years as a volunteer at Maine Medical Center. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was always there to dote on her grandchildren or join them in a watermelon seed-spitting fight at Sebago Lake.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the tender loving care she was given by Fallbrook Woods. To all their kind friends and neighbors, a special thank you for the prayers, cards, hugs and love.
At Barbara’s request, there will be no service or visiting hours. A headstone was placed next to Newell at Brooklawn Cemetery.
