Born January 1933 in Portland, she was the daughter of Henry and Leapha Turner. Barbara lived a life rooted in faith, love, strength, generosity, and devotion to family.
She shared a deep and enduring love with her devoted husband, Lawrence W. Sawyer Jr. (Skip), who preceded her death in 2007. Their bond was an inspiration to family and friends alike. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Beth Brooks in 2024.
Prior to her marriage in May 1957, Barbara attended Westbrook College (now UNE). She was a medical secretary for many years, and always had a deep love for horses.
Above all else, Barbara was a wonderful mother, celebrating every success, and created a home with warmth, laughter and unconditional love.
Barbara was an accomplished seamstress and business owner. In the late 1970’s and early 80’s she created a successful hat line that was sold in Carroll Reed Ski Shop. She also owned a consignment shop for many years in North Windham called The Designer Flea, which brought her great joy. Through her business, she built lasting friendships and was a beloved presence in the community.
Barbara will be remembered for her sense of humor and the love she gave freely to family and friends. She was a creative soul and had a quiet strength that carried her through life’s joys and sorrows alike. Whether sewing, riding, working in her shop or spending time with people she loved, Barbara brought warmth, humor, style and grace wherever she went.
She leaves behind family and friends who will miss her deeply and remember her always.
Her surviving relatives include her daughter Merideth Millett and her husband Thad of Windham, niece Donna Ireland and her husband Wayne of Gorham, nephew Mark and his wife Michelle of MI, niece Alison Prawer and her husband Todd of Boothbay, and brother-in-law Cedric J. Porter of Cumberland Foreside.
Barbara’s family would like to thank Gorham House for their care over the last several years, and to Affinity Hospice for their love and support in the last few hours of her life.
There will be a private graveside service at Brooklawn Cemetery.
