Portland, ME- Barbara Joyce (BJ) Young Vessey, 89, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on July 25, 2026. She was born in Portland, ME, on September 24, 1936, a daughter of W. Sidney and Elizabeth (Boyle) Smith. She graduated from Portland High School in 1955 and worked for the former Maine National Bank for many years as well as Nurses House Call. As a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, she was involved in many activities such as Choir & Vestry until she was no longer able to do so. She enjoyed reading, arts & crafts, puzzles, listening to music (a big Elvis fan), watching New England Patriots games, and travelling.
She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Robert O. Young; her second husband, William A Vessey; nephew, Russell (Rusty) Flaherty; long-time friend, Margo A. Hirtle, and special friend Paul G. Chamberlain. She is survived by her sons Paul R. Young and Dale A. Young (Lisa); grandson, Zachary R. Young; granddaughter, Jennifer Doucette; great grandchildren, Austin & Samantha; sisters, Patricia Smith & Jacqueline Flaherty; and niece, Theresa Flaherty.
Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 pm Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10 am on Friday, August 7, 2026 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 678 Washington Ave., Portland, ME with burial following at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland. Many thanks to the Home Health team at Northern Light Hospital, the nurses in the Critical Care Unit at Maine Medical Center, and all the other medical facilities that have been so kind and helpful over the years. Flowers and/or donations may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church as their spiritual support has been invaluable.
