Unforgettable friend and sister Betsy Ann Wilhelmsen departed this world for her next great adventure May 4, 2023. Born in Portland, Maine, she beat the odds by outliving her 18-month cancer prognosis, which she largely kept private so people wouldn't worry about her.
However, her love for her German Shepherd rescue dogs was well known. Over the years, Betsy adopted and adored her six German Shepherds who she treated like queens although others saw them as unwanted or unlovable. Betsy and her dogs shared the same tough-on the-outside, gentle-on-the-inside qualities.
Those closest to Betsy—including many dogs—appreciated and loved her sarcastic, witty, and empathetic personality. She loved them, too, and insisted on making them only the best meals and snacks with the finest ingredients. Cooking was her love language.
Betsy was generous with her time and money and helped create memories as the compelling entertainer she always was. A chameleon with distinctive friend groups, she shifted her interests to reflect the passions of those closest to her.
From bartender to phlebotomist to IT business analyst, her careers were as diverse as her hobbies. Betsy enjoyed traveling, day trips, neat finds, theater, good views, skiing, and exploring new places with her dogs. She truly lived well, loved much, and laughed often.
She leaves behind her sister, Jean Wilhelmsen, of South Portland, Maine, extended family members, her best friend and canine companion Lucy, trusted colleagues at Sweetser, and many friends who were more like family.
