Beverly O' Gara

Beverly O'Gara passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026, at Birchwoods at Canco Woods, surrounded by her loving family.

Beverly was born in Pownal, Maine, and was raised by her adoptive grandparents, the late Francis and Birdina Handy. She often recalled her many happy childhood memories with her "Grammy and Grampy," living on the family farm, raising livestock, and getting into all kinds of mischief, often alongside her beloved cousin, Roberta.

Beverly graduated from Norway High School with the Class of 1952. Following graduation, she moved to Portland, where she met the love of her life, William "Bill" O'Gara. They married in 1956 and lived off campus while Bill completed his studies at Springfield College. Together, Beverly and Bill made their home in Westbrook, where they raised their family and built a life centered on service, community, and love.

Beverly and Bill formed a remarkable team. Throughout Bill's political career, Beverly was always by his side, organizing fundraisers, planning events, and representing Westbrook throughout Maine and across the country. She served as Bill's trusted sounding board for speeches and as an advisor on policy and messaging. In many of Bill's communications, one could hear Beverly's no-nonsense, plain-spoken influence. She was his most trusted advisor, collaborator, and partner in every sense of the word.

Beverly's life was defined by her love and care for others. She remained deeply involved in the lives of her two children, always eager to know what was happening and to ensure they were happy and well. Her devotion extended to her grandchildren, whom she cherished beyond measure. She was a constant source of encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love throughout their lives.

Beverly loved trying new recipes and bringing people together. Whether hosting annual spaghetti dinners for Bill's baseball teams or opening her home for Cinco de Mayo and Halloween gatherings with friends and neighbors, she always went above and beyond to make sure everyone felt welcome, well-fed, and cared for. Her passion for baking led her to start her own business, Cakes Galore, earning her the affectionate nickname "The Cake Lady" among many in the community. Her Christmas Eve lobster stew became a treasured family tradition that will continue for generations to come.

Sports were also a significant part of Beverly's life. She and Bill were faithful supporters of Westbrook High School athletics throughout the 1970s and 1980s. At home, the television was often tuned to Boston sports, especially the Celtics. Beverly was an avid golfer who participated in numerous leagues and tournaments over the years. She traveled extensively with her golfing friends throughout New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Southeastern United States, returning home with wonderful stories, lasting friendships, and cherished memories.

One of Beverly's greatest joys was traveling with Bill. Together, they were always looking ahead to their next adventure. A chance meeting with dear friends John and Judy on a cruise in the 1990s blossomed into a lifelong friendship and countless shared journeys. Over the years, the foursome explored destinations across the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe, creating treasured memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

In addition to her grandparents, Beverly was predeceased by her husband, William "Bill" O'Gara; her sister, Glennis Deakin; and her brothers, Vincent Irish, Richard Irish, Donald Irish, and Woodrow Irish.

She is survived by her daughter, Beth O’Gara and her husband, Brian Poitras, of Westbrook; her son, Michael O'Gara of Westbrook; her grandson, Alexander Otis of Westbrook; her grandson, Tanner Otis, and his wife, Michaela Caizzi, of New Market, Maryland; her brother, Ormand Irish of Augusta; her beloved cousin, Roberta Bodlovic of Falmouth; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Randy Barr, the staff at Birchwoods at Canco Woods, and Beacon Hospice for the compassionate care and kindness they provided to Beverly.

Friends and family are invited to her visitation and reception on October 4, 2026 from 12 PM – 2 PM at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland.
