

Portland- Carl Lerman, passed away peacefully at the Cedars, surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 19, 2014, after a lengthy residence. The youngest son of Lewis and Fannie (Richman) Lerman, he was born in Portland, Maine on October 11, 1926. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he attended the University of Maine at Orono where he graduated in 1949 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He married his beloved Shirley Rae Gill in August 1951 and together they began a wonderful life, celebrating 55 years of marriage. He joined the family business, E. Perry Iron and Scrap Metal after college and became the President/Co-owner, retiring after 45 years. He dedicated his life to his family and his work.
Carl enjoyed playing golf, but his passion was singing. He was a longtime member of the Temple Beth El Choir and a member for 12 years of the Downeasters Barbershop Chorus. He was a very special person whose wit and charm enriched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Carl was predeceased by his wife, Shirley. He is survived by his children: Jodi and her husband Howard, Lisa and her husband Bill, Patti and her significant other Steve, Marc and his wife Lori. He also adored his grandchildren: Selena and her husband Damien, Alberta, Vanessa, Zachary and Brianna and his great grandson, Owen. Of his 10 siblings, he is survived by his sister Rose Lemovitz from Florida. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Sandra and her husband Allan, and many nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Cedars and Hospice of Southern Maine for their care and love of our Dad. They treated him with respect and dignity.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 10:00AM at Congregation Bet Ha’am, 81 Westbrook Street, South Portland, Maine. Interment will follow at Temple Beth El Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family after the cemetery service at Bet Ha’am for lunch and a celebration of Carl’s life. The family will be sitting that evening from 6:00PM -8:00PM at Bet Ha’am. Services are under the direction of Jones, Rich &Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in Carl’s memory to The Cedars, 620 Ocean Ave, Portland, ME 04103, or Congregation Bet Ha’am.
