Scarborough- Charlotte Sullivan died at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough on September 19th, of injuries she sustained in a fall at her home. She was 95 years old. She was born in Queens, New York, the second child of Robert and Charlotte Lilienthal. Her elder brother, Robert, predeceased her.
Charlotte grew up on 97th Place in Corona, New York, a stone's throw from the Tiffany Glass Studio. She attended New York public schools, and later worked in Manhattan for an importer of Irish linens.
Her first husband, William Maxwell, died within weeks of their wedding while serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. She later met and married Herbert Sullivan, and moved to Maine, first to Pushaw Pond, then to Hermon, and finally to Portland, where she lived the rest of her life. Herb Sullivan died in 1991.
Charlotte brought her relentless enthusiasm to a variety of endeavors. She sold books at the Porteous department store, and at the University of Southern Maine bookstore. She spent several years as a representative for Avon cosmetics. Her love of books led her to join the Women's Literary Union. She was also active at Trinity Church, serving decades in the Altar Guild. Charlotte could be seen frequently pedaling her bicycle around town, well into her seventies. In her later years she volunteered at the assisted-living community at 75 State Street, “helping the elderly”, who were in many instances younger than she was.
Charlotte Sullivan is survived by two sons, Donald and Daniel, both of Portland, two grandchildren, Peter Sullivan of Portland and Kristy Patterson of Hope Mills, North Carolina, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother's daughters, her nieces Bonnie and Nancy Lilienthal.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, September 24, 2015 from 4-7 PM, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 25, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 580 Forest Avenue, Portland, with the Reverend Lawrence B. Weeks officiating. Interment will be held at 1:30 PM, following a reception at the church, at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St. Portland.
