David Andrew Halligan Sr.

Falmouth, ME- David A. Halligan Sr., a pillar of his community, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully in his home in Falmouth surrounded by family on May 19, 2024, at the age of 95. David was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on January 17, 1929, a son of Charles and Adora (Lemire) Halligan. Tragically, he lost his mother at birth but was tenderly raised by his Godparents, Frank and Anna Rose (Lorrain) Bryden, who provided him with a loving and nurturing upbringing.

In his youth, David's family relocated to the Munjoy Hill section of Portland, Maine, where he attended Portland Schools. A spirited athlete, he excelled in Cross Country and Baseball, graduating from Portland High School with the Class of 1948. Following his education, David found employment at the A&P bakery for 22 years. He was also one of the first bartenders when the Top of the East opened at the iconic Eastland Hotel (Westin). Lastly, he worked as a grocery manager for Shaw’s Supermarkets for another 22 years until his retirement.

While at Portland High School David met the love of his life, Janet Murphy. They were happily married for 69 years until her passing in 2018. Together, they built a beautiful life and welcomed seven children into their hearts.

David served his country as a member of the U.S.Naval reserves. He was stationed on numerous ships during the Korean Conflict from 1948-1952. He was also an active and proud member of American Legion Post 164 where he served as chaplain.

In 1956, the family settled in Falmouth, where David became deeply entrenched in community life. His commitment to youth sports was evident as he was one of the founders of Falmouth Little League where he coached both Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. His dedication extended beyond sports; he became the first male President of the Elementary School PTA, where he initiated the first Spring Fair to raise money to supplement educational activities. He was a dedicated 60-year supporter of Falmouth High School events and sports, cheering proudly as his children and some of his grandchildren participated in various activities. His presence in the stands will be missed.

For 55 years, David served with honor and distinction in the Falmouth Fire Department, as captain of station three and eventually rising to the position of Deputy Chief. Until this year, he continued to place fire dept. flags on the graves of deceased Engine 3 volunteers every Memorial Day.

A devout Catholic, David found solace and strength in his faith, regularly attending services and engaging in activities at St. Pius Church-Our Lady of Hope Parish in Portland.

David cherished moments spent with Janet, particularly their trips to Florida to visit family and friends. Disney World was a favorite destination for them. On their 65th Anniversary, they were asked to be Disney Ambassadors and preside over the opening of the park.

David Halligan Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his community, and his steadfast faith. His legacy of volunteer service and compassion was recognized by the town in 2021 when he received the Legacy Award for his years of exceptional service to the Falmouth community. He was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Janet, his brothers Kenneth, and Raymond and his sister Bernadette. He is survived by his children, Catherine Munroe (Alan) of Sebago, David Halligan Jr. (Joy) of Falmouth, Peter Halligan of Greenville, Pamela Loubier of Gorham, Karen Berry (David) of Old Town, Colleen Starkey (Thomas) of Falmouth, and Claire Clonan (Richard) of Scarborough.

His seventeen grandchildren were privileged to have his advice and affection for so many years: Kimberly Gatchell, Gregory Johnson, D. Andrew Halligan (Katie), Patrick Halligan (Maureen), Anna Halligan, Todd Halligan (Carlene), Addie Halligan, Amanda Loubier, Clayton Loubier, Benjamin Berry (Kristin) Molly Berry, Timothy Berry, Matthew Starkey, Katie Starkey, Thomas Starkey (Emily), Mairead Clonan and Patrick Clonan.

His thirteen great grandchildren have many happy memories of celebrations and traditions spent with him: Ashley, and Bailey Gatchell, Camryn Toy (Tommy), Jack, Harper and Taylor Halligan, Seamus and Una Halligan, Dylan and Kyle Berry, Charlotte and Lillian Starkey, and Carter Matthews. Number fourteen Baby Halligan is coming this summer and will surely be watched over from above. One great-great grandchild, Dakota Toy and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to long-time neighbors, Jay and Janice Hallet for their continuous watchful eye and willingness to help, to Northern Light Home Care & Hospice and to Dr. Steven Dobieski for his attentive care of David over the years.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland, ME 04103. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland, ME 04103.
