PORTLAND - Dorothy Milton, 91, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2106, from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Waterville, the daughter of the late William Clifford and Regina (Lachance) Jordan, Dottie lived in Auburn, Portland, and Yarmouth.
She met her future husband, John W. Milton Jr., while working summers at his parents’ seasonal business, Milton’s Lakeside Cabins, in Winthrop. Their courtship was interrupted by World War II, and she graduated from Cornell School of Nursing and worked in New York City as a Registered Nurse. Dottie and Warren were married in 1952, and raised four children.
Dorothy was a hard and intelligent worker and worked for several physicians in Auburn and Portland who much appreciated her skills. She often worked as a private duty nurse when the demands of raising a family prevented her from working full time.
After “retirement,” she and Warren owned Elena’s, a popular breakfast and lunch spot in Yarmouth, where they made lifelong friends. They enjoyed traveling in a small RV visiting friends and grandchildren, and spent winters in Arizona and Florida. She was an enthusiastic bird watcher, reader, and loved her flower gardens.
She is survived by her son, Jack, and his wife, Susan Healey, of South Portland, daughter Eileen, and her husband Robert Johnson, of Longmont CO, son James and his wife, Vicki, of Golden CO, daughter Martha, of Old Orchard Beach, four grandchildren, her sister, Mary Edwards, of San Antonio TX, and her brother, Richard Jordan, of Augusta.
Visiting hours 4-7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5, Jones-Rich-Hutchins Funeral home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Avenue, Portland. Burial will be in the spring at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
