Falmouth, ME- Elizabeth S. Hessemer, 97, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2018 at her residence. She was born in York, PA, a daughter of Maurice and Elizabeth (Brunhouse) Smyser. Betty graduated from William Penn High School. She studied at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Barnes Foundation. While at the Academy, Betty received the Cresson Traveling Fellowship.
She married Fritz M. Hessemer in 1944. They had three children; Marcia Page of Windlesham, England, Peter Hessemer of Lake Forest, Illinois and Jane Stegemann of Falmouth, ME. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
In addition to homemaker and mother, Betty was a freelance illustrator of Jack & Jill Children’s Magazines and for Curtis Publishing Co. books from 1947-1962.
In 1976, the family moved from York, PA to Rehoboth, DE, making their summer residence their permanent home. Betty was a member of the Rehoboth Art League serving on the Board of Trustees and teaching for a number of years in the spring sessions.
For 18 years, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of St. George’s Chapel of All Saints Parish and an active church member her whole life.
A private service will be held.
