

Elizabeth Blair Hodgkins McAfee, age 101, passed away in her sleep on April 25, due to complications from a recent fall. She was the widow of Harold G. McAfee and a long time resident of Portland. Most recently she was a resident of Park Danforth for the past sixteen years.
Elizabeth was born in Bath, Maine on December 22, 1908 to Elwood Blair and Mabel Sparks Hodgkins. She grew up in Bath and Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School and Shaw’s Business School. She was employed at Bancroft & Martin and later became a successful realtor in Portland, and a Charter Member of the Women’s Council of the Portland Board of Realtors.
She married Harold G. McAfee in 1932, and together provided a supportive and loving home for her four sons. She was always supportive of her sons activities in sports and music and particularly proud of her many years as Cub Scout den mother. The family enjoyed their many summers at their cottage on Forest Lake.
Elizabeth was a member of the Woodfords Congregational Church in Portland for over 75 years and served in many capacities including Sunday School teacher, the Whatsoever Class, the Women’s Woodfords Club and initiated the penny drive that was instrumental in the elevator construction project in the parish house. She continued to attend Woodfords Church services when held at the Park Danforth.
Until her final illness, she enjoyed operating her laptop computer daily, communicating with family and friends and surfing the net, having acquired that skill at age 90.
Her true “hobby” was making new friends and enjoying their lifetime friendships. She led a joyful life of purpose and devotion to family, her faith and her friends--a legacy to be treasured by all her who knew her.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Harold, her parents, a sister Ruth and a brother Elwood Jr.
She is survived by four son’s; Robert and his wife Doris of Portland, David and his wife Ann of Ozona , Florida, Kenneth and his wife Judith of Cumberland and Bruce and his wife Marcia of Portland. She is survived by seven grandchildren; Deborah McAfee of Windham, Steven McAfee and his wife Lisa of Wayland, Mass, Robert J. McAfee and his wife Tammy of New Bern, North Carolina, Patricia McAfee of Windham, Julie Arbogast and her husband Elmer of Westbrook, Susan McGill of Orange Park, Fl, and Amy Holmes and her husband Cooper of Bangor. Also survived by twelve great- grandchildren, and a niece Nancy Taylor and her husband Richard of Cumberland and a nephew Robert Ladisch of Chicago.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday May 5, 2010 from 4 to 8PM at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St.
Funeral service will be held Thursday May 6, 2010 at 11 AM at Woodfords Congregational Church 202 Woodford Street, Portland with Revs. Carolyn Lambert and Annette Mott officiating.
