Raymond – Frank D. Hugo of Raymond, Maine and Gulfport, Florida passed away on Saturday, following an illness. Mr. Hugo, husband of the late Harriet Hugo, and of the late Janet Hugo, leaves a loving daughter, Debra Beth Goldberg, of Salem, MA; a devoted son, Michael R. Hugo and his wife, Beverly Krauss Hugo of Framingham, MA and a dear son, Stephen J. Hugo of Seminole, FL.
Mr. Hugo was born in Portland on October 21, 1921,a son of the late Morris and Esther (Schibe) Hugo. He graduated from Portland High School, and entered the US Army Air Corps in which he proudly served as a flight engineer and an instructor on B-29’s. He served as a Flight Officer, stationed in Mississippi, Texas and Colorado. Following World War II, he joined his father and brothers in his family business at Portland Copper & Tank Works, to which he brought his love of flying, expanding the metal fabrication company into the aviation subcontracting field. As Vice President of sales, Mr. Hugo procured many government contracts for his business involving the manufacture of jet engine components, military hardware, and top secret missile and radar hardware manufacture, including rocket nozzles for Atlas and Saturn Rockets used in our nation’s space program, and Minuteman, Nike and other defensive missiles. With his father, Morris, and his brothers Harmon, George and Harold, they built the business to the point that Portland Copper was one of Maine’s largest employers, with nearly 2000 workers in several facilities in South Portland. Their business was merged into E.W. Bliss Company, at which time Mr. Hugo remained as V.P. of sales. The business continued to grow¬¬, and was later sold to a multinational conglomerate, Gulf & Western Industries (Viacom).
Upon the sale to Gulf & Western, Mr. Hugo retired at age 48, to the life of a “snowbird,” spending his winters in Florida, and summers at his much beloved home on Sebago Lake in Raymond. While in Maine during his summers, he dabbled in real estate for several years, working with the Beecher Agency, in industrial real estate sales. During that time, Mr. Hugo destroyed several of the area’s finest golf courses with his trademarked fairway shots where the divot occasionally outdistanced the golf ball.
He was an active member of the Windham Rotary Club, which he was proud of for its incredible contribution to the Lakes Region. He was also a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Cornerstone Lodge, AF & AM, formerly Brotherhood Lodge and a member of Aleppo Temple of the Shrine. Mr. Hugo was also a founder of Junior Achievement of Maine.
Mr. Hugo enjoyed a life of travel to exotic places, and especially enjoyed his life with his family in his retirement. No matter where he went, he proudly related stories of the most important place to him, Maine. Just prior to his death, he stood in his living room, looking out at the activity on Sebago Lake, and stated that there is no place on earth he would rather spend his last days than looking out at the sunlight reflecting across the waves on a windy afternoon at the lake.
The last part of his life was spent surrounded by his loving family, especially his grandson, Mark, who graduated from college this past spring, and who is an EMT, and dedicated his summer to caring for “Poppy,” never leaving his side for the entire summer.
Mr. Hugo’s beloved wife Harriet passed away in 1982, and he remarried to Janet Starrett Hugo thereafter. Janet passed away in 2008. In addition to his three children, he is survived by his loving sister Evelyn Hugo Finkelman of Portland, and his very dear brother Harold Hugo of Sebago. He was predeceased by his sister Beverly, who died as a teenager, and his brothers Harmon and George Hugo. He left 6 grand children, Andrew, Shoshanna and Alyson Goldberg of Boston, Carly Hugo of New York City, and Mark and Matthew Hugo of Framingham, MA. He recently was blessed with a great-grand-daughter, Rachel Goldberg. He leaves many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
