Scarborough, Maine
Butch Tanguay, 71, passed away on May 21, 2015, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born in Portland on December 7, 1943, the son of Edmond G. and Phyllis A. (Brigham) Tanguay. Growing up, he enjoyed spending time at his two Grandfathers cottages (Cedric Brigham and Eugene Tanguay) in the summer at Prouts Neck.
Butch graduated from South Portland High School in 1961. He then graduated from Gorham State Teachers College with a Bachelor’s degree in Music. He went on to earn his Master’s degree from University of Miami. He played the saxophone inspired by his father who was in the Army Corps band during World War II.
Butch joined the Air Force Band and was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone for his term. He then played in the band that toured with the Platters, and later, on cruise ships with other stars including Gordon and Sheila MacRae’s daughter Meredith. Returning to Maine, he played with several bands in and around the Portland area. St. Gerard was a nickname given to him by many due to the amount of patience he had regardless of circumstances.
Until his passing, he had spent several years as a Check Point guard at the Portland International Jetport as a TSA agent.
Butch is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara of Scarborough and her daughter Ginny; his daughter, Dori Tanguay of Fort Lauderdale, who he loved dearly; sisters, Maureen Tanguay, Ann Gammon and her husband Dana of Windham, and their children, Lynn and her husband Tom Roberge of Gray, Lara Maloney and Michael Gammon of South Portland; brother, George Tanguay and his wife Carolina and their children, Bryant and Andrew of Raymond. Also enjoyed his great nieces and nephews; Brianne Maloney, Jacob Maloney, Owen Maloney; Cameron Roberge; Logan and Sawyer Gammon.
A private graveside service will be held at St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery in Westbrook.
