

PORTLAND – Helen Schwey Levine, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away on August 17, 2012, from cancer. Helen was the daughter of Henry and Sarah Schwey. Helen was born in Portland where she lived most of her life until she and her husband, Harvey Levine moved to Falmouth in 1982. After graduating from Portland High School, Helen worked as a book-keeper for Reliable Furniture until marrying Harvey in 1958 and becoming a home-maker and later a mother. Once her children were grown, Helen provided childcare in her home for over twenty years. Prior to that, she also managed His and Hers Cleaners which she owned with her husband and worked at Time-Warner Cable. Helen belonged to Temple Beth-El in Portland. Helen is survived by her son, Eliot Levine who now lives in Boston, MA, daughter, Cathy Levine Gilgore and her husband, Dr. Lloyd Gilgore who reside in Doylestown, PA. Helen was also the loving grandmother of Jarrett (19) and Erica (17) Gilgore. In Portland, Helen is survived by her sister, Rita Weisberg and brothers-in law Abe Benjamen and Edward Richman. She is also survived by her sister, Marcia Cutler of Boynton Beach, FL. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Harvey Levine and from Portland, her sister, Judith Benjamen, twin sister Dianne Richman and brother-in-law, Edward Weisberg. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law, Henry Cutler from Boynton Beach, FL. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews who will all have affectionate memories of Aunt Helen. Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service at Temple Beth-El, 400 Deering Ave., Portland, on Tuesday August 21, at 1:30 p.m. Rabbi Carolyn Braun will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Temple Beth-El Memorial Park. Shiva will be observed at the home of niece and nephew, Karen and Alan Lerman at 3 Van Carll Circle in Scarborough following the funeral and from 6-8 p.m. that evening. Helen and her family want to thank all of the caring and devoted staff at Mercy Hospital before she moved to be closer to immediate family in Doylestown, PA.
