

Helen V. Sheets passed away on September 28, 2011 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor, Maine. She was born in North Kingstown, Rhode Island on December 20, 1930 to Helen Jenks (Vaughn) Remington and George Frank Remington, Sr. She grew up in North Kingstown and graduated from North Kingstown High School.
Helen graduated as a registered nurse from the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing and was commissioned in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force she met her husband at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Helen and Leon (Don) Sheets were married in Tokyo at Yokota Air Force Base on October 11, 1958.
After leaving the Air Force, Helen and Don returned to the United States and raised their children Donald and Julie. When the family moved to Maine, Helen joined the staff at the Spurwink Medical Office in Cape Elizabeth working for Drs. Briggs, Larned, and Hallee.
After retiring, Helen and Don split their time between their summer cottage on Little Sebago Lake in Gray, Maine and their home in Haines City, Florida. Don and Helen moved back to Portland, Maine in December 2010 to be closer to their family.
Helen was predeceased by her parents and a brother Herbert Remington. She is survived by her sister, Hope Barber of North Kingstown, RI ; her brother George F. Remington, Jr. and his wife Thelma also of North Kingstown; her beloved husband, Leon of Holden, Maine; her son Donald H. Sheets and his wife Barbara of Holden, Maine; her daughter Julie A. Sheets and her husband Paul Proudian of Gray , Maine; her granddaughter, Erin M. Sheets of Stamford, CT; her grandson, Donald C. Sheets of Old Orchard Beach, Maine and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Cranston-Murphy Funeral Home, 140 West Main Street, North Kingstown, RI. A private burial service will be at the Rhode Island Veteran’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maine Veterans’ Home, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, Maine 04401.
