Dec. 1, 1940 – Dec. 3, 2015
SCARBOROUGH – Col. Henry Scott Harrison, USMCR (RET) passed away on December 3rd with his family by his side.
Born on Dec 1, 1940 in Winchester, MA the son of Paul Henry Harrison Jr and Barbara Abigail Way, Scott moved to Yarmouth at an early age and graduated from Deering High School. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1964 following graduation from the University of Colorado.
Scott completed flight school in 1966 and was assigned as a pilot in Marine Attack Squadron 311 flying the A-4 Skyhawk. Scott flew 193 combat missions in Vietnam and also served as a Forward Air Controller with the 3rd Marine Division.
Scott returned to the US in Nov 1968 and was assigned as a flight instructor in the Advanced Training Command in Beeville, TX.
In 1970 Scott resigned his regular commission but continued to fly the A-4 in the Marine Corps Reserve with Marine Attack Squadron 322 based at the Naval Air Station in S. Weymouth, MA.
His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, multiple awards of the Air Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Following his USMC active duty, Scott returned to Maine and settled in Gray, marrying Melissa Swenson. Scott balanced work, family, active community service and Boy Scout leadership with reserve duty. Scott retired as Colonel USMC Reserve in 1995 and headed to Landstuhl, Germany with his family. After Melissa’s passing, he continued his civil service position there until a Charleston AFB assignment opened. In 2005, he met Connie Sukeforth on one of his visits back to his beloved Maine. In 2008, Scott returned to Connie and Maine for good. They married in 2010.
Scott was a man of many interests and a member of numerous organizations including Marine Corps Association, Distinguished Flying Cross Association, Skyhawk Association, Marine Corps Aviation Association, Wounded Warrior Project Member, Guild of Maine Woodworkers, and Maine's First Ship Association Member. Scott loved sailing, skiing, golf and any outdoor activity that included nature – even if it entailed hard labor. Caught indoors, you’d find him reading history, woodworking in the barn or puzzling - from pencil crosswords to iPad puzzles if the Patriot’s weren’t playing. His family and the Marine Corps always came first, however.
Scott is survived by his beloved wife Connie Harrison; his son Andrew SF Harrison, Kelly Cronin and their son Alexander of Oak Park, IL; his sister Abby Williamson and her children Sarah and Ethan Williamson and their families; his brother Charles Harrison PhD; and cousins Digg Caliri, Shelley Hudson, Carol Way Wood, John R and Philip Way. Scott is also survived by Connie’s children Matthew Sukeforth, Tyler and his wife Stephanie Sukeforth and their daughter Nora.
Donations in Scott’s memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Regiment, 1998 Hill Ave, Quantico, VA 22134 or The Salvation Army, PO Box 3657, Portland, ME 04104.
Visitation will be held at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland on Thursday, Dec 10th from 1-3pm with a Celebration of Life Service at 3pm. Military honors will follow.
