

Herbert “Herb” Chester McAlister, lieutenant JG, Navy (Ret) 82, of Westbrook, had his family by his side when he passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born on August 2, 1928 in South Paris, ME. son of the late Chester R. McAlister and Helen O. (Libby) McAlister.
Herb graduated from Deering High School in 1946. He attended Maine Maritime Academy and graduated in 1949. Herb started his career as a Merchant Marine sailing for Texico for eight years and began his service to his country in 1955 entering the US Navy. He married the love of his life, Mary L. Small on Feb. 21, 1955 and spent the next 56 years making memories. He was a proud owner of eleven harness horses whom he enjoyed tending to. Herb was a sports fan especially the New York Yankees and New York Knicks. He was a dedicated employee and VP of Chase Leavitt Ship Agency working on the waterfront for 43 years and retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Portland Propeller Club, Elks Lodge, Rotary, Portland Marines Society and the Maine Harness Horsemen's Association. Herb was an outdoors men enjoying farming, gardening and camping. Some of his most treasured times were those spent with his family.
He is predeceased by his grandson, Andrew.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary L. (Small) McAlister; daughter, Robin McAlister Lawson and husband Tom; son, Dennis H. McAlister and wife Cathy; sisters, Barbara and Agnes; brother, Arthur; grandchildren, Kathryn, Alexa, Bretton, Shane and Ryan.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 1-2 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 2pm at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, located on 199 Woodford Street in Portland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House
