Back in the early 1930's, an 8-year-old boy used to peek in the cellar window and stick out his tongue at a 16-year-old young man who was engrossed with his ham radio.  That pesky kid was my father, Paul Emerson, and the teenager was Herb.  That was how they first met; and the rest, as they say, is history.

I've known Herb my whole life....literally.  My mother went into labor at his birthday gathering & I was born shortly thereafter.

Aside from working at Portland Marine Radio from almost its inception until I left for CA in 1981, I have many other fond memories of spending time with Herb.  Since both Herb and Doris were friends with my parents, it's natural that many of these memories would include my family.

Herb introduced my father to boating. Some of my happiest days as a teenager were when my dad and I would go boating and we'd encounter Herb on his.  We would then moor together at Diamond Cove or head to Long Island for lunch.

For several years before I left for CA, Herb and Doris would get together with my mother and me every August at our cabin in Limington.  The purpose of this gathering was to celebrate our August birthdays, which we would do by cooking lobsters and having a wonderful meal. 

After my father passed away, it was Herb who met me at the airport, spent time with me at the house so I wouldn't have to be alone, and helped me to sort through his things.  He was a huge help to me.

Some of my closest friends have accompanied me as I've visited ME throughout the years, the most recent occasion being in 2012.  From co-workers to friends, they all would meet Herb, usually at Handy Boat for dinner.  Without exception, each and every one of them would comment on what a unique and interesting person he was and how much they enjoyed meeting him.

Herb truly seemed to love life and he lived it on his own terms.  He was unpretentious, genuine, and his enthusiasm was infectious. He never seemed to run out of "stories" to tell. For me, Cape Elizabeth won't be the same without him.

I just found out about your loss.  I know somehow my father, Charles Odlin, was related to the Strouts as was my dear Brother "Bud Odlin.  What wonderful stories I have heard from years back. May you be conforted with your wonderful memories.You all certainly can be proud. Bless all of you

I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. I had the privilege of meeting Herb a few times on my visits to Maine. He was an amazing guy and I am honored to have had the opportunity to talk with him.

Many of my greatest childhood memories are times I spent with Gram and Gramp at their home or on the island. Gramp was so interesting to sit and talk with about life. I was fascinated by his stories of the world when he was young. I felt so safe to tell my grandfather anything and I appreciated the advice I would receive in return. At times it was harsh but real and he did not judge me for my faults. We spent hours playing cards while listening to jazz and big bands, he just loved his music.  
I am struck with such grief that he is no longer here to guide me through life. I will miss you so very much. Until we embrace again.

It was an honor to know Herb. One of a kind. I still think it's a heck of a way to get out of buying me the lobster roll he owed me! Condolences to Doris and Herb's entire family.

I was sorry to read of your father's death in the morning paper.  He certainly lived a remarkable and enviable life, enjoying every minute.   My sympathies to all of you.

Our sincere sympathies to Herb's family - I remember many happy visits on Little Sebago and in the Strout home! We will be on hand to celebrate Herb's life on Saturday.

I learned to water ski behind Herb's boat at their camp on Sebago... learning to swim ...being pulled on a toboggan behind his old Jeep..at his home in Cape. He was my Dad's Best Man and good friend.  Thanks for the memories and my deepest sympathy to Doris and the kids.
