FALMOUTH -- Hilda Maxine Ballard Richardson, 80, passed away peacefully at Sedgewood Commons on Monday, April 18, 2011.
She was born on Dec. 21, 1930, in West Enfield, the daughter of Roger and Wilma Ballard. The family moved to Portland and she graduated from Portland High School. She met her husband Seldon, and they married in 1949.
She was a member of The Eastern Star, Clark Memorial Methodist Church and a Gold Card member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). She and her husband Seldon could be found many weekends at the race track where she worked grid, assisting the race drivers on the track, including Paul Newman.
She loved gardening, was a strong advocate of animal rescue, especially cats, and owed several over the years. She was always thinking of her family and friends and was extremely giving. Hilda is best remembered for her sense of humor and love of life. Everyone who met her never forgot her.
She was predeceased by her husband Seldon in May, 2009; her brothers, Roger and George, her sister, Thelma; and her granddaughter, Brenna Richardson in 2007. She is survived by her sister, Charlene Hicks, brother, Jack; her two sons, Dennis and his wife Karen of White River Junction, Vt., Scott and his wife Amanda of Yarmouth; grandchildren, Heather Brown and her husband Paul of Attleboro, Mass., Ian Richardson of White River Junction, Vt., Sam and Julia Richardson of Yarmouth, Dylan and Zachary of Old Orchard Beach; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Avery Brown of Attleboro, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to all of the staff at Sedgewood Commons for all of their caring, compassion and support for Hilda.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, April 23, at 11 a.m., at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland.
