Hoa Nguyen

March 4, 1951January 15, 2021

Portland, ME - Hoa Van Nguyen, 69, loving husband of Stephanie Angeline DiLuna Van Nguyen of Portland, passed away on January 15, 2021 at Maine Medical Center. Born outside of Ho Chi Minh City, on March 4, 1951, Hoa was one of six siblings and is predeceased by his beloved mother Xuan and his father Luot. A veteran of the Vietnam war and the South Vietnamese Army, Hoa left Vietnam in 1975 after the fall of Saigon. He traveled alone by sea for three months, settling in Portland. Hoa and Stephanie, whom he affectionately called Angeline, were to celebrate their fortieth wedding anniversary this September.

Hoa retired from Nissan Bakery after 15 years. Most recently, he found great joy working with the children and staff at Back Cove School on Ocean Avenue.

His easy smile, compassion, love, and generosity touched all who were blessed to know him. He had a special gift of knowing exactly what you needed and then giving it to you at just the right time. He loved to laugh, to play cards, to drive cars, to fish, to play horseshoes, and to entertain his grandchildren. He loved dancing and he was an amazing cook who never turned anyone away from his table. He was a kind, gentle and noble spirit, who loved his Angeline and his family with boundless loving kindness.

Hoa is survived by his wife Stephanie; his son Derek LaVallee and wife Vanessa of Cape Elizabeth; his step-children Douglas LaVallee and wife Lisa of Natick, MA, and Maureen Thayer of Cornish; his grandchildren (who lovingly referred to him as Ong Noi) Samantha Vaznis of Windham, Jak Vaznis of Portland, Maya LaVallee of Cape Elizabeth, Jessica Struhs of Poland, and Emilia & Dylan LaVallee of Natick, MA.

A Mass of Christian Burial for immediate family members was celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on January 23, 2021, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery immediately following.

The Van Nguyen family wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to the doctors and nurses in the COVID-19 ward at Maine Medical Center.

I met Stephanie and Hoa briefly decades ago. I was immediately taken by their profound connection, the kind that doesn't happen as often as it should. Their energy and positivity together was infectious, even in memory now. Although I am saddened to learn of Hoa's passing, that sadness is eclipsed by the sense of happiness knowing a man like Hoa was here, and our lives were made better for it. Thank you Stephanie for being there for Hoa, as he was and still is for you. - Jim

I was so saddened to see Hoa's death notice.
I remember you and Hoa always having smiles on your faces when you came into the bank. You may not remember me as I retired from TD almost 8 years ago.
My sincere condolences to you and your family.

“Who Dis?”
I will always remember Hoa walking 100 miles to come see me after he and Stephanie had an argument. We talked for awhile and I drove him home. He was fiesty and I loved that about him.
We became good friends that day and I was honored he chose me to come too!!

I have some great memories with he and Stephanie❤️❤️❤️
One things for sure he loved Stephanie, never a doubt about that. He was a brave man taking her on and 3 kids!
And FINALLY she agreed to marry him❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’ll always think of Hoa when I wash my vegetables, he told me we have cancer in this country because the vegetables weren’t clean!!
He showed me how to wash them in dish detergent!😂
He also taught me to cook some great food!!
Rest In Peace sweet man 🙏🏽❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
