He was the son of Genesio and Adelina (Russo) Cerino, Italian immigrants who made their home on Portland’s East End. Jacob grew up on Munjoy Hill—a place he always held close to his heart.
Jacob spent more than 35 years working as a driver for Portland Metro, and he became a familiar and friendly face in the community. He also served faithfully as an associate pastor, with a heart for prison ministry and nursing home visits, where he shared the hope of Jesus with countless people.
On May 28, 1965, he married his sweetheart, Theresa Cecelia Mercier. They shared many years together before Theresa went to be with the Lord in 2010.
More than anything, Jacob loved sharing the hope of Jesus. For many years, you could find him out on the same Portland streets he grew up on—dressed neatly in his fedora, holding his Bible and a sign, always ready to talk with anyone who would stop and listen. He truly cared about people and never missed a chance to share his faith.
Jacob shared a close and loving relationship with his 10 children, 13 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of joy in his life.
Jacob is survived by his children: Debra Reynolds and her husband, Philip, of Baldwin; Brenda Cerino-Galli and her husband, Ernie, of Portland; Cristina Cerino; Jacob Cerino of Gorham; Joseph Cerino of Windham; James Cerino of Fayetteville, NC; Elizabeth Roberts and her husband, Heath, of Casco; Rebekah Payne and her husband, Ned, of Portland; Joanna Ritchie and her husband, Bob, of Gray; and Cindy Seeley and her husband, Scott, of Auburn. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret. Jacob was predeceased by his four brothers and two sisters.
He is now reunited with the two he loved most—his wife, Theresa, and his Savior, Jesus.
Visitation will be held at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, on Thursday, May 7th from 4–7 p.m. Funeral services will be held the following day at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m.
