

Born in Arlington, MA on May 5, 1927, John was the son of William and Leila King Bunton. After graduation from high school in 1945 he joined the Army Air Force. While stationed in Illinois, John met and married his beloved Gayle Cooper, with whom he would spend 53 happy years.
After mustering out of the Army in 1946, John attended Dartmouth College and received his BA. He then went on to the Amos Tuck School of Business, where he graduated with an MBA in 1951.
After graduation, John worked as a Partner for Loomis Sayles Investment Management for 38 years. During this time he earned the designation Chartered Financial Analyst.
John and Gayle lived for 38 years in Reading MA where they raised four children. Following retirement, they moved to Parsonsfield, ME where he lived for 22 years. John was a member and treasurer of the West Newfield Congregational Church. In late 2010, he moved in to The Atrium at Cedars in Portland, ME.
John was a past member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge, Arlington, MA. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening (“puttering”), researching stocks, collecting wood stoves and bird watching. He also enjoyed vacations on Peaks Island where spent almost every summer of his life. John’s greatest joy was spending time with his loving family.
John was predeceased by his wife, Gayle, on January 8, 2001, as well his brothers William and Elliot Bunton and his sister Phyllis Sommers.
John is survived by his children and their partners, Robert and Rebecca Bunton of Windham, ME, John and Bonnie Bunton of Newfields, NH, Catherine Bunton and Kristine Perkins of North Yarmouth, ME, and William and Melissa Bunton of Cumberland, ME. He also adored six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Family and Friends are invited to a time of visitation from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday, June 12, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland, ME. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Monday at the Windham Hill United Church of Christ, 140 Windham Center Rd, Windham, ME. Following the service, friends and relatives are invited to attend a reception at 1 PM at the Cumberland Club, 116 High St, Portland, ME.
The family would like to express its gratitude for the compassionate care provided to John by all the staff of both Gosnell Memorial Hospice House and Maine Medical Center. The family would especially like to acknowledge the wonderful staff on the Richards Wing, second floor of the Maine Medical Center.
