John Joseph McDougall

John was born in Grand River, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was the only child of Herman and Rosella (Arsenault) McDougall. After the death of his mother during his infancy, he was cared for by her family. At the age of 9 he was brought to live in Portland, ME by his Aunt Laura and Uncle Angus Campbell. They lovingly raised him as their own.

He attended Cathedral Grammar School where he was a proud member of the boys choir, then attended Cheverus High School, graduating in 1939. John enlisted in the US Army Air Force (AAF) as an airplane and engine mechanic serving in Northern Africa and Italy during World War II.

After the war he met the love of his life, Josephine (Finn) Arsenault whom he married in 1951. Together they raised 6 children in So. Portland.

John was employed by the A&P Bakery in Portland until their closure. After that, he worked for the First National Bakery, the Portland School Department, and retired from the US Postal Service in 1986.

John was a man of strong determination, faith, and will. He lived independently in his own home until the age of 95. His longevity was due in part to his constant striving to educate himself about healthcare. This earned him the title of “Dr. McDougall” to those who knew him best.

His interests were many. These included, golf, music, photography, and harness racing. After retiring, genealogy became his passion. He so enjoyed his annual trips back to P.E.I. for research with his sister Mary Bouchard, with whom he shared a special bond.

John was predeceased by his parents; his wife Josephine in 1989; Aunt Laura and Uncle Angus Campbell; brothers Joseph, Herman, and Daniel Campbell; a half-sister Margaret Doucette.

John was the loving patriarch of a very large family. He is survived by his children; Marilyn Lorello (Jim King), Stephen McDougall, Thomas McDougall (Isabelle LaFrance), Daniel (Elaine) McDougall, Elizabeth Boyle, Patricia (Duane) Asdourian; grandchildren, Amanda Sawyer, Heather Boyle, Michael Lorello, Jason Asdourian, Brian McDougall, John Asdourian, Maria Lorello Plourde and Kevin McDougall; great-grandchildren, Taylor Manning, Zachary Green, Emma Green, Kaden Manning, Jaxon Skehan, Calvin and Dylan Asdourian; brother, Leo Campbell; sisters, Mary (Richard) Bouchard and Theresa Bowler; niece, Diane O’Neill of P.E.I. and many more nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank The Inn at Atlantic Heights in Saco, ME for helping John have a safe and caring home for 2 1/2 years, and the staff at The Maine Veterans Home for providing such loving and attentive care during John’s last few months.

Friends and relatives are invited to a time of visitation from 3:30- 7 pm on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Jones Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Saturday, December 30th at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Interment with military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in the spring.
