Joseph E. (Tim) Dufour , age 91, of Portland passed at Birchwoods, on June 28th a place that became home to him. He left as quietly as he lived and joins his loving wife, family and buddies. Tim was born in Portland, son of Andrew Dufour and Helen Waite Dufour. He graduated from Cheverus High School. He proudly served in the Army as a S/Sgt in WWII with the The 7th Armored Division, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was honored to serve under the command of General Patton. He was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart and others which he did not talk about being the modest man that he was.
Tim worked for many years at Century Tire Company and later General Electric from where he retired.
Tim was always an avid sportsman. He was a great baseball first baseman in his younger years. He enjoyed coaching “Kippy’s“ little league team with his brothers in-law and loved teaching and working with the kids. Tim loved golfing. As often as he could you would find him on the course with Obie, Richard and Jimmy, his brothers in law, or his sisters-in-law Carolyn, Ethelyn and Betty or his favorite golf outings were with his daughters Linda & Irene. His golfing claim to fame is getting a hole in one on the 8th hole at Riverside South. He always commented that he thought his daughters would get one someday also!
Tim, was a man of few words, but he was definitely a joker. He loved to laugh and to make people laugh. He loved listening to music and had a really great voice. You could always hear him quietly singing or humming whenever there was music playing.
He was the master of “Timmy-isms” as we call them, these are amusing comments that were funny but usually had a point! He had a wonderful impish grin that would accompany his comments . He was not a complainer and most always in good spirits, Oh he did have his bad days but rarely showed them to others. He never wanted to put anyone out. He was a strong, reliable, and stoic man, generous and respectful to all people.
Tim was predeceased by his loving wife Lauretta O’Brion Dufour, his sisters Marie Fitzsimmons, Clara Leonard, Rita Caufield, and Dottie Lavangie, a brother John and a best friend and much loved brother in law Harold (Obie) O’Brion. Tim is survived by his daughters, Linda Dufour, Irene Dufour and her partner Christine Hersey, an almost daughter Theresa Huck, and a son Joseph Dufour Jr. He is also survived by a younger brother Richard and his wife Jean, much loved sisters in law Carolyn O’Brion Fuller and Ethelyn O’Brion and brother in law Jim O’Brion and several nieces and nephews.
