Karen L. Henigan Henick passed away November 5, 2013, at her home peacefully in her sleep. She was born on February 6, 1969 in Providence, Rhode Island, the youngest child of Wilbur and Carol Cordes Henigan.
Karen was first introduced to Maine during family vacations spent at Moxie Cove. When she was eight, she and her family moved to Windham. Karen learned to ice skate at an early age and became an accomplished figure skater.
After graduating from Windham High School in 1987, she worked as a bookkeeper in the corporate office of Kentucky Fried Chicken, and then later became a payroll specialist at the Westbrook School Department. At Westbrook, Karen was known for her honesty and empathy in helping co-workers deal with their financial and personal difficulties. She made many deep and lasting friendships.
Karen, a mother of three young children, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 36. Karen was determined to fight her illness regardless of what challenges she faced. Karen stayed strong, upbeat and enthusiastic with a smile on her face that was inspiration to all. She became everyone’s reminder of what a good day really is.
On November 2, 2013 with the contagious smile, she married the love of her life, Paul Henick in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire, in the presence of their children, family and friends.
Karen was lovingly cared for by Pam, Hope, associates of Southern Maine Hospice, and her favorite Aunt Ruth Taubl.
Karen is survived by her husband, Paul Henick of Windham, her three children, Nicole, Tyler and Connor Gelinas, all of Windham; Paul’s daughters, Janine and husband Josh Fifield of Portland; and Mariah Henick of Windham,;her parents Wilbur (Bill) and Carol Henigan of Windham; brother Michael Henigan and his husband Kelly Hillard, of Atlanta, GA; sister Linda and her husband Eric Duntley of Scarborough; brothers Stephen Henigan and wife Christy ,of Corinna; Donald Henigan and wife Kim, of Bath. She will be missed by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces, Nephews and beloved friends. Karen is also survived by her loving cousin Danielle and husband Marc McEwan and sons, from Darien, CT.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Friday November 8 from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland, Maine. Funeral services will be Saturday Nov. 9 at 11:00 A.M. in the First Lutheran Church of Portland, 132 Auburn Street. Interment will be at a later date in the Arlington Cemetery in Windham, Maine.
