The daughter of Forest E. White Sr. and Julia B. (Converse) White, Kathy was born in Portland, Maine on October 4, 1929. She graduated from Falmouth High School and went on to attend Laselle Junior College in Newton MA, returning to Maine to earn her associates degree from Westbrook Junior College. Kathy worked at Stepping Stones Country Day School in Falmouth for over 20 years as a teacher and driving the children to and from school. She attended St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Falmouth, Foreside. Katherine traced her genealogy back to the May Flower, and was a proud member of the Mayflower Society and made sure that her “blue blooded” children and grandchildren joined as well.
Kathy married George R. Lawrence in 1957 and they started their life together on Commonwealth Drive in Portland Maine and moved to Phillips Rd in Falmouth where they lived for 20 years and raised their two children. In retirement she and Bob split their time between Florida and Maine. Neither of them liked to fly so they traveled by land or sea and had many adventures while in good health. One of their favorite vacation spots was at Rock Gardens Inn, in Sebasco, and they were able to go as an extended family for several years before her health declined.
For many years Kathy and Bob volunteered on Sundays and holidays at Preble Street Resource Center.
Kathy was predeceased by her husband Bob in 2001 and a sister Nancy B. White in 2004. She is survived by her daughter Julia Desjardins and her husband Steve of Topsham and a son George R. Lawrence of Old Orchard Beach. She was fondly referred as Gram Gram by her grandchildren, and took special joy and interest in; Jessica Lawrence, Chantalle Desjardins and Avery Desjardins. She attended as many of their sporting and school events as she could while in good health.
Per Kathy’s request there will not be any services. A private burial will be in the Spring at Pine Grove Cemetery at Falmouth Foreside in the family gravesite. Services are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
Katherine’s family would like to offer a special thank you to the kind hearted folks at Brentwood and Birchwoods for making Kathy a part of their family, and treating her with respect and dignity as her disease progressed.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Katherine’s memory to Preble Street Resource Center, PO Box 1459, Portland, ME 04104.
