Kay Loring of South Portland passed away on July 10 after a period of declining health. She was born August 30, 1933 to Stephen and Florence Hasson of Peaks Island, her favorite place on earth. Kay knew and loved every inch of the Island.
She married Robert Loring in 1955 and raised their 4 children in South Portland. Kay practiced real estate for many years, mentoring women along the way. She owned and operated Carriage House Properties in Yarmouth, an all women office. She was also very active in real estate development, building Blueberry Cove Condominiums, Olde Stonewoods, as well as many single family homes and apartments.
In 1995, she and her brother Gig Hasson worked with a group of concerned citizens to purchase 14 acres of land, which had 2,200 feet of shoreline, for the City of South Portland. She started a grassroots preservation campaign, and thru the herculean efforts of Kay, Gig, Al Glickman, Phil Grondin, the Soucy Family and Port Harbor Marine, Blue Rock Industries, Portland Pipeline, Greater Portland Development Corp as well as many more individuals, they prevailed against Irving Oil Company and created Bug Light Park.
Kay was a role model who instilled the value of hard work to all of her children. She was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1999, her parents, brothers John, Dan, Richard, Larry and GIg, and her sister Pat Fahey.
Kay is survived by her children Sabrina, Robert, Mark, Joe and his wife Maureen. She also is survived by her grandchildren Serena, Sean, Zak, Jack, Casey, Cora, Julia, Josh and his wife Jenni, Courtney and her husband Sam Hall, Tyler and his wife Maria, Gabrielle and her husband Andrew Keeley, and great-grandchildren Rohnan, Grady and Addison, as well as her beloved niece Kelly Hasson.
A time of visitation and gathering for Kay’s family will be held Thursday July 14, 2022 from 4-7 PM at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland. Interment will be private for the convenience of the family.
