PORTLAND — Larry Littlefield, Director of Security for the City of Portland for 26 years, and Company owner of Atlantic Professional Services, Inc. has died unexpectedly at the young age of 49 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital on April 14, 2010, due to complications from cancer.
He was born Lawrence A. Littlefield in Bangor on Sept. 29, 1960, the son of Richard and Norma Littlefield. Larry was raised in Portland and graduated from Portland High School in 1979.
During his high school years and after graduation, Larry worked as a cook at Mercy Hospital. While working days as a cook, he was one of the first employed members of the Cumberland County Civic Center security team. In the early 1980s, the Portland Exposition Building wanted to start having concerts in their venue. His father, Richard Littlefield, was already employed by the Portland Exposition Building as building security and stated that Larry had experience with entertainment security. In 1981, Larry was hired as head of security for the Portland Exposition Building. Throughout the years, many events have been held at the Expo. Larry has continued to build the security division to what it has become today.
Larry was also very much all about family, most of which, have been employed by the City of Portland Public Assembly Facility Department and Sea Dogs, and three of which are still employed there today: his father, Dick, nephew Nicholas, and former wife, Janet.
Also, in the early 1980s, Larry and his older brother Dicky, started to work summers as reserve officers for the Old Orchard Beach Police Department. They were nicknamed Bumper and Thumper.
While continuing to be employed by all the previously mentioned security positions, the demand for event security in Maine was increasing. Larry found it in his heart to follow his own dream and form his own security company, now known as Atlantic Professional Services, Inc. ~ APS, (formerly known as KAST).
Larry traveled on the road with many bands, some being, the Greatful Dead, the Rolling Stones, and Journey, his favorite band. From its inception, APS was the original security team for the band PHISH.
For close to 20 years, Larry’s APS event staff team has worked the following venues. Most of which in still ongoing today…WCSH Art Festival, WSCH Maine State parade, Beach to Beacon, Family Fourth at Fort Williams, Portland Downtown District Concerts in the Square series, Old Port Festival, Rockland Lobster Festival, Temple Beth El, LaKermesse, Oxford Plains Speedway Monsters of Rock, University of Maine Orono MCA Center, Lewiston Colisee, Augusta Civic Center, Cumberland County Civic Center, SEAPAC, Unum Golf Tournament, Meadowbrook, N.H. Summer Concert Series, Skyy Show in Manchester, N.H., Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Mount Cranmore, Sugarbush, Vt., Foxboro Stadium, the filming of the movie, The Preacher’s Wife, at Deering Oaks, filming of the television show, The Extreme Makeover, in Wells, and the Asylum.
We all now understand why Larry worked so long and hard to accomplish so much, while forming his legacy. As stated by his big brother, Dicky, “Larry was Maine’s event security.”
In the early 1990s, Larry also founded his own long haul trucking company, titled R&L Trucking. Contracted with RC Moore Company. For close to 10 years, Larry’s three rigs ran freight coast to coast. One of which was proudly driven by his father Dick, with his mother Norma riding shotgun, knitting her doilies along the way. His company continued until the price of fuel made it difficult to sustain this
avenue of business.
Being a company owner and manager, Larry was very approachable. He respected and treated everyone the same. He had the ability to have a professional relationship with his employees as well as a personal friendship with most. Many employees that work for Larry achieved personal and professional growth. He was always willing to educate those that showed interest in learning, talked with those who needed help, and assist anyone who would ask for his help. He loved the employees he had and took a personal interest in each and every one of their lives. Larry will always be remembered for his own personal greeting ~ a big bear hug.
Even with Larry’s busy life of work, he had time for many hobbies and interest, which included riding his motorcycle, collecting memorabilia, playing poker, traveling, collecting art, attending NASCAR races, going to Red Sox games, and rescuing dogs.
Being a long time volunteer with Second Chance Boxer Rescue and Golden Retriever Rescue Lifeline, Larry loved dogs and would do anything for the rescue. Larry would jump into his truck in a moments notice and drive hundreds of miles to save a dog. He will be sadly missed by everyone, but the dog community lost a dedicated volunteer. Larry had a super soft spot in his heart for the older dogs. Adopted rescue dogs throughout Larry’s life have been Abby, Tasha, Seboeis and Alex, which
have all previously passed before him. Larry’s current family consisted of his three golden retrievers, Amy, Ginger and Dakota. Let us not forget the German girl he got as a puppy, Atika, who tormented him by eating his electronics and company supplies. Hope Daddy has forgiven his girl as she is with him now.
Larry is survived by his parents, Richard and Norma Littlefield; sister Dolores Carpenter and husband Bob, brother Henry (Butch) Beltran Jr. and wife Maggie, brother Richard (Dicky) Littlefield and wife Michelle, sister Norma Jean Meehan and husband John; former wife Janet Littlefield; nephews Ricky Moffett, Chris Moffett, Brian Beltran, Nicholas Meehan, and nieces Darlene Beltran-Robinson, Jessica Littlefield, and Melissa Littlefield. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph Beltran.
