

He was born in Portland , Maine on January 4, 1935 to parents George and Alberta (Gaynor). He lived in Portland, Maine till the age of 7 at which time his family moved to Peaks Island. Lou attended grade school on the island and later graduated from Portland High School in 1954.
After high school, he enlisted in the US Air Force and worked as an aircraft mechanic on multiple bases including in England. His four children were born in four different states due to multiple assignments. Lou’s time in the Air Force also included two deployments to Vietnam. He finished his service career in the National Guard. Following his discharge from the Air Force he worked 16 years at Portland International Jetport at Northeast Air servicing planes and later was employed at Maine Medical Center in the Supply department. He retired at the age of 60. After retirement from full-time work, he found great joy in working as a Portland school crossing guide for 25 years. He loved seeing the kids every day and asking them about their school day.
Lou was an advocate for veterans and a lifelong member of the Portland VFW Post # 6859 and he served as Post Commander in 1984 and at the state level he was the Sargent of Arms several times. Nationally, he was a VFW Aide-de-Camp. He attended almost every monthly meeting, visited dozens of older members and conducted many VFW rituals for deceased members. Lou also belonged to the American Legion in Westbrook and the Portland Eagles Club. He was also a communicant of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Scarborough.To everyone who knew Lou he was a true patriot!
He married the love of his life Marion Fox on 6/7/1975. They celebrated 50 happy years together in June 2025 with family and friends. Lou and Marion spent their years together traveling on multiple trips seeing 48 states together and spent many winters in Florida. They both loved music and going to local band concerts in the summer. Rarely did you one see one without the other.
He was predeceased by his parents, his siblings Mary Work, of Westbrook, Connie McNeal of Arkansas, Alberta “Trudy” Howland” of Rhode Island, and George Alexander Jr. of Portland.
He leaves behind his wife Marion of Scarborough, his children George of Topsham, Cindy Thibeault (Mark) of Portland, Louis Jr (Antoinette) of Gray, and James of Gray, his stepchildren George Smith of Portland, Edna Curit of Old Orchard Beach and Alfred Smith (Christine) of Portland as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation on Tuesday October 28 from 9 am to 11 am followed by a Catholic Prayer Service at 11 am at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home 199 Woodford Street, Portland, Maine. A graveside service will follow at New Calvary Cemetery in South Portland with full military honors @ 12:30 pm. A reception at Portland VFW post # 6859 in Portland will follow to celebrate Lou’s life. Come prepared to share a story about Lou. He was very active and social and always on the go. His life motto was “ you gotta go while you can”.
