

Portland – Louise A. Johnson, 95, died on Friday August 29, 2014 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a brief Illness. She lived on the Middle Road in Falmouth for more than 30 years and later Willowood Lane in Scarborough for 25 years before moving to the Osher Inn at the Cedars in the fall of 2011 till present.
Mrs. Johnson was born to Swedish immigrants Peter Albert Nashland and Alma (Larson) Nashland January 5, 1919 on the second floor over Anderson’s store in Stockholm, Maine. During her early years they lived in New Sweden, Maine and later moved to South Portland where her father as a carpenter was looking for work. She graduated from South Portland high school class of 1936 and attended Northeast Business School. She was employed by Interstate Furniture in the office in 1941 and later the Thomas Laughlin Co. (American Hoist & Derrek) during WW II. On September 6, 1942 she married William S. Johnson a 1938 graduate of South Portland high school, while he was on leave from military service. Mr. Johnson was a third generation owner and operator of Johnson’s Public Market at 24 Wilmont Street in downtown Portland. In their early years of their dating on a Saturday night, it usually involved grocery deliveries around the city in a Model A Ford truck and heading out to the pier at OOB to dance to the big bands. After the war they purchased their first home in Falmouth and raised three children. She enjoyed neighborhood friends, reading, music and trips to Cousins Island beach in Yarmouth and Simpsons Beach on Sebago. During the 1960’s she was employed as a secretary for many years by Dr. David Lovely an Otolaryngologist in Portland. In her later years she enjoyed many travels together with her husband Bill, most especially, their summers on Big Sebago at their son’s home where family and friends frequently visited. Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong member of the Emmaus Lutheran Church in Falmouth.
Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her husband William S. Johnson, of 52 years in 1994, and by her sister Dorothy Coppinger in 1997.
Surviving Louise is her sister Grace Brackett of Leesburg Fl. her two sons, Ronald S. and wife June of East Sebago; William P. and wife Katherine of South Casco; a daughter Karen L. Boyer of Nashua, NH; and her most cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kimberly (Johnson) Gatchell, of Epsom, NH; Gregory Johnson, of Sacramento CA; Erica Johnson of Windham; Derek Johnson of Biddeford; Holly (Boyer) Bajar, of Sacramento CA; Matthew Boyer, of Portsmouth NH; and great-grandchildren Ashley Gatchell, Camryn Gatchell, Bailey Gatchell; Hayley Cavanaugh, Jazmyn Johnson; Tallulah Bajar, Savvyl Bajar; Amara Boyer, Sienna Boyer.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Emmaus Lutheran Church, 265 Middle Road, Falmouth, Maine, Pastor Robert G. Gustavson, officiating . Friends and family are invited to attend a time of visitation at 10:00 am prior to the service. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 88, Falmouth. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Emmaus Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
Her family would especially like to thank the staff at the Osher Inn for all their love and support of thier Mom, Louise, for the past 2 ½ years.
