Marcie Louise (Vokey) Nobile , 92, of Portland and more recently of The South Portland Nursing Home, South Portland left this earth on July 9, 2020 to join her beloved husband, Ralph. Late in her life Marcie used her incredible strength and fortitude to fight off one illness after the other to stay on this earth with her family as long as she could. Marcie is the daughter of the late Mark and Bertha (Eveleth) Vokey. She attended local schools including Portland High School.
At the young age of 18 she met her future husband at a dance and they were married a year later. She said her husband caught her eye because he was a good dancer. We used to tease her and say that he literally danced his way into her heart. They were married 51 years at the time of her husband’s death.
Marcie was a very strong, determined and resourceful woman. In addition to working various jobs throughout her life (A&P Bakery on Lancaster Street, Mammoth Mart on Washington Avenue, Hays Drug Store on Congress Street, and ending her working career at Stinson’s Danish Bakery on Veranda Street, Portland) she raised five very rambunctious children. She loved Friday nights, as she, her husband Ralph, and their two close friends from Waltham, Massachusetts would go dancing at the Eagles Club on Valley Street in Portland. She always dressed to the nines, and for certain, was the best looking woman there. Her hair was always immaculate. She would go to the hair dresser every week to have her hair done, and a hair was never out of place. She continued this practice until very, very late in her life. She gave us all heart full memories of summers at the lake, special Christmases, and love that she bestowed on all of us. She valued being with her family above all else.
In addition to her five children, Marcie had five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and nine step great grandchildren. All of the children were treated as equals. In her own words, the only steps in her home were the steps the led upstairs to the bedrooms. Her love for all was never ending and was equal for all family members.
Marcie is survived by four of her children; Linda R. Nobile of Portland, John A. Nobile of Portland, Michael P. and his wife Angela of South Portland, Pauline F. (Nobile) Flagg and her husband Andrew Flagg Jr. of Otis Field, and her son-in-law Christopher Bove of Westbrook. Marcie was predeceased in death by her husband Ralph P. Nobile and her daughter Nancy Lee Bove.
All of Marcie’s family would like to thank the staff at the South Portland Nursing Home, and Compassus Hospice in Scarborough for their compassion and commitment to the quality care that was provided to our mother during her illness.
Friends and relatives are invited to a visitation from 6-8 pm on Friday, July 17, 2020, at the Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME. CDC guidelines will be adhered to during visiting hours. A private burial will be held at a later date.
