

The daughter of the late Harry Charles Dackerman and Serena Campora Dackerman, Marjorie was born on May 13, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY. She was raised in Northvale, NJ, and Elkins Park, PA, and graduated from Melrose Academy in 1940 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1944. She was employed as a research chemist at the Electric Storage Battery Company, the Lankenau Institute for Cancer Research, and McNeil Laboratories.
In June 1954, Marjorie married LCDR William S. “Bud” Carlson in the chapel at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Navy assignments took them to Bermuda, Carmel, CA, Philadelphia, Norfolk, VA, Washington, D.C., and Brunswick, ME. After Navy retirement in 1964, the family, including son, Craig, and daughter, Cynthia, moved to Cumberland Foreside. Marjorie and Bud later moved to Falmouth.
Marjorie was a long-time communicant of Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth, where she taught religious education, served on the Social Justice and Peace Commission, and was involved in many other parish activities. Over the years, she also was a volunteer at the Maine Medical Center’s pediatric playroom, the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s Women’s Committee, and Literacy Volunteers. Most recently, she was a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen for 16 years.
Marjorie enjoyed tennis, golf, gardening, book discussion groups, crossword puzzles, and hiking trails in Acadia National Park and the canyons of Arizona. The Carlsons’ travels also took them to Europe, New Zealand, Alaska, and the Canadian Rockies and Maritimes as well as to numerous Elderhostels throughout the U.S.
Marjorie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Craig Carlson and Martina Curtin, of Boston, MA, her daughter, Cynthia Beckham, of Sudbury, MA, and grandsons William E.D. Beckham of Fort Benning, GA, and Daniel N.P. Beckham of Sudbury, MA. Bud Carlson died in August 2008.
A memorial service will be held at Holy Martyrs Church in Falmouth at a later date.
