CUMBERLAND Marlis Shane passed away peacefully on April 20, 2017 at her son & daughter in-laws home in Cumberland, Maine. Marlis was born October 3, 1937, the youngest of 10 children. Her parents were Herta and Theodor Lindmueller of Celle, Germany. After completing business school in Germany, she moved to the United States in the early 1960’s with her three children. She became a naturalized US Citizen in the late 1960’s. Marlis began her professional career in interior decorating, worked as a district manager for Beacon Way Fabrics and a retail manager for Burlington Coat Factory in South Portland, and then Bangor, Maine where she retired in 2011.
Marlis battled cancer for over 12 years and Alzheimer’s for the past three. Her memory issues were increasingly frustrating for her, but she knew all of her family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren throughout her illnesses.
Marlis is survived by her, son and daughter in law Bill and Linda Shane of Cumberland, Maine, daughter Patty Shane of Biddeford, Maine, and daughter Barbara Shane-Michaud of Bangor, Maine; eight grandchildren; Jordan and Zachary Shane, and Craig and Chad O’Donnell, Anthony Atkins, and Hannah, Emily, and Maia Michaud; and three great grandchildren; Cassidy, Cadence and Jack. She is also survived by her eldest sibling, Ruth Ehlert of Celle, Germany.
Marlis lived in many places but ultimately enjoyed winters in Florida and summers in Maine. She volunteered throughout her life, most recently at the Community Food Pantry in Cumberland. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, craft fairs and the fall fair season. She loved her many friends at Burlington Coats and the many day trips with her good friend Margaret.
The Family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of Southern Maine, Ashley, Caroline, Jennifer and Jade for all there care and support. The Family would also like to thank the staff at the Stewart Adult Day Center in Falmouth where Marlis spent hours with a wonderful, compassionate and caring staff who made her visits entertaining and joyful. She thought of these visits as her afternoon trips to the Country Club where she socialized with friends and loved the staff members who made her feel so welcome.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, April 26th from 5 to 7 PM at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., in Portland. A service will follow at 7 PM at the funeral home. A reception with light refreshments will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marlis’ name can be made to the Community Food Pantry of Cumberland, 290 Tuttle Road, Cumberland, ME 04021.
