Maurine Pompeo

Maurine (Guimond) Pompeo, age 91, of Portland and Standish passed away at her summer home on Sebago Lake on July 15, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 19, 1935, Maurine was the oldest of 3 children born to Reney and Laura (Gagnon) Guimond of Caribou, Maine.

She grew up in Portland, Maine and attended Cathedral Schools where she was valedictorian of her class. She later attended Portland High School and graduated in 1953 where she met the love of her life, Rocco J. Pompeo. After high school, she began her career at the Portland Press Herald. On September 6, 1958, Rocco and Maurine married and would have celebrated 68 years of love and partnership this fall. They moved to Veranda Street in the East Deering neighborhood of Portland, where in 1960, they started a family and had six children; Laurie, Nancy, Paula, Joey, Toni, and Roxanne.

Maurine excelled at being a homemaker. She had a knack for wallpapering, painting, and decorating. Her talent for sewing shone through the beautiful clothes she created for her children, and the curtains throughout her homes. She devoted herself completely to her family by instilling traditions, values, and faith. God guided her throughout her life, and she remained a devoted Catholic.

She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, and a member of the Italian Heritage Center.

In 1965, Rocco and Maurine purchased a cottage in Wards Cove on Sebago Lake. Shortly after they encouraged their best friends (The DiPhilippo’s) and the Severino family to purchase cottages too, which led to their children and grandchildren to settle there as well. Maurine’s legacy lives on through the Cove and the dozens of homes lined next to each other where these families make their fondest memories every summer. Maurine always showcased a kind and generous spirit. Often her husband or children would invite friends over, without her knowing, to their house or cottage. No matter how many would drop by, she always made sure the table was full, generously cooking meals and making everyone who walked through the door feel welcome. Sunday sauce was a staple throughout the summer and is a tradition that will be cherished for many generations after her. Thanksgivings and Easters hosted at her home on Veranda Street were filled with all the food and love anyone could ask for. Maurine made everyone she talked to feel special and she had a laugh that was contagious. She was reliable, loyal, and full of energy.

When her family grew up, she went to work for her son at Pompeo’s Variety and later at her son-in-law’s store, Severino’s Variety. People remember her greetings, warm welcomes, and kindhearted conversation. Maurine was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and one more on the way. Being “Nana” was among her greatest joys. She rarely missed a family sporting event or activity, supporting them and being their biggest fan. From high school state championships to collegiate matchups, she was a constant in the stands. She and Rocco would bicker over who they got their athletic genes from… her quick wit was best matched by Rocco, and their playful back-and-forth will be fondly remembered and greatly missed. Maurine had a fierce strength and courage shone brightly until her final moments leaving behind a legacy and resilience that will forever inspire all who knew her.

She was pre-deceased by her parents Reney and Laura (Gagnon) Guimond, her brother Lincoln and his wife Pat (Markley), and her brother Whalen. Maurine leaves behind her devoted husband, Rocco Pompeo; her brother-in-law, John Pompeo (wife, Kathy); her sister in law, Kay Guimond; her children Laurie (Guy Thompson), Nancy (Gino Mancini), Paula (Scott Symonds), Joey (fiancé, Meghan Mullaney), Toni (Thomas Coyne), and Roxanne (Brad James); her 18 grandchildren, and her 7 great grandchildren; and countless family and friends who will miss her dearly.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 10am at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland, ME 04101. Interment will follow in the family lot at New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
