Melvin "Mel" Linwood Tukey, a devoted and humorous individual, passed away on November 2, 2025, at the age of 91. Born in Damariscotta at Memorial Hospital on November 26, 1933, Mel was the beloved son of Egbert and Laura (Poole) Tukey. He spent his final days at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough, Maine.
Mel's early life was marked by his passion for music, which began in high school with his band, Mel Tukey and the Clam Flat Five which he continued to play trumpet and coronet with the rest of his life. His musical journey continued as he played in the Bellamy Jazz Band for about 30 years and participated in several community bands. He was even featured in the movie "Bed and Breakfast" with the Bellamy Jazz Band and Roger Moore. Mel played at the first 50 boat launches at Bath Iron Works.
Mel graduated from Morse High School in Bath and from Kent's Hill School, and later with a business degree from the University of Maine in 1957 and followed up with a master's degree in education.
Mel taught for many years in Winthrop Maine as well as several other schools in Maine. He taught as a grade schoolteacher and music. He was also a Principal in a few grade schools.
He was an avid Red Sox fan, with a love for playing golf and played baseball during his high school years. He was a proud grandfather and enjoyed attending the grandchildren's sporting and theater events.
A proud veteran, Melvin served in the Army and played in the band at West Point. He was honored to play taps at many veterans' graves and for Wreaths Across America. His dedication to his community was evident through his membership in the Buxton Masonic Lodge #115 and the Shriner's Band.
In May 1964, Mel married Geraldine Marie Reinhardt, with whom he had three children: daughter Carolyn Eyerman, married to Mark, of Gorham, and sons Steven Tukey, married to Kelly of Windham, and David Tukey, married to Deborah of Gorham. Although later divorced, Melvin found love again with Paula Corbett and later with Carolyn Adams. He was a proud grandfather to Benjamin and Lily Tukey, Blake Parker, Anthony Dugan, and Alex Tukey, and a cherished great-grandfather to Nina Eyerman. Mel is also survived by his sister, Carla Wilson, and nieces Laura Corbin and Suzanne O'Donnell.
Mel's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Veteran's Home, Maine Medical Center, New England Rehab, and former neighbors Debbie and Joyce for their kindness and support.
In his final words, Mel expressed his affection with "Sweet Darlin." He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
