I will miss Mike very much. I keep expecting him to walk through the door to say hello or to see him driving around town in his old green truck with the big teddy bear in the passenger seat. I loved all of his stories about his dog at the beach, being in the Army band, hiking and coming across cool places in the woods, finding a museum/collection in an old barn at someone’s house during on of his drives, and coins on a grave among so many others. He was a wonderful caring man and I feel blessed to have known him.

My heartfelt condolences to the Nicholos family in Mike's passing.  I grew up and lived in Portland for 55 years before moving to Oklahoma in 2001.  My wife and I have a summer condo at the Diplomat next door to Mike's lovely property.  Met Mike in 2001 a
while in Maine and connected with him many times each summer when he was enjoying the beach.  I always enjoyed our chats as we had many acquaintances in common and shared lots of Portland memories growing up.  We always had barbs with each other and lots of laughter and I will surely miss that.
I don't think I ever saw Mike at the beach when he was not reading.  He would often arrive at the beach just to sit and read and he had his Rv to read inside if the weather was inclement.  He was truly a throwback and a unique friend.  He always welcomed me when I would stop over and we had many laughs.  A very kind and simple man.  My favorite memory of Mike is:  One day 2 or 3 years ago I was visiting with Mike in his RV as we had just arrived in Maine.  While I was there the Old Orchard Beach code enforcement officer knocked on the door and told my the camping was not allowed on his property and he would have to remove the RV motor home.  Mike said he never camped or slept in the RV and only enjoyed sitting and reading while looking out the front window.  I verified this with the official.  Mike said this was his personal property which he elected to enjoy during his visits to the property.   He said to go and issue him a citation and he would see them in court.  When the official got up to leave Mike said to him:  "You just look at me and you judge me as not being smart.  But you should know I have a PHD which is something you don't have and I know my rights."  The official left and no citation was ever issued.  After he left, I told Mike that I've known him for 15 years and never knew he had a PHD.  His response - "Sure you did I graduated with a Portland High Diploma.  Rest in Peace with the Lord, my friend.

We are so grateful to Mike and his family for making our lives possible. They introduced my parents to one another and employed my father on his first job in the United States in 1955. We celebrated many unforgettable family years of life together. We are grateful for all of the wonderful memories! May his memory be eternal.
