Departed this life on December 9, 2017. Born February 23, 1917 in Ashford Alabama, to the late Amos and Dora (Rivers) Register, Sr. Minnie defied the odds of being a sharecropper’s daughter in the segregated south, to live long enough to vote for the first black president, and die a proud Black Woman.
Moving to Maine in December of 1944, Minnie joined Green Memorial AME Zion Church, where she faithfully served on the Stewardess Board, Home Missions Society, and was known to recite a poem, or sing a song.
Minnie was the Queen of her castle, and you only had to visit to see how impeccable her castle was. With the latest in home trends, designs, and fashion, Minnie made sure her days of growing up poor, and without, were in her past. As Minnie progressed in age, her sharp wit, and one liners, were young, fresh, and funny. She loved her “Witches Brew” Sprite with a splash of nip, and all who knew her, knew it.
She leaves to celebrate her life two sons: Samuel Jones Jr, of Connecticut, and Michael Jones, of Portland, two grandchildren: Nathaniel Lee Daniels, and Tamyka Renee Jones, nieces: Ann Jewel Parish, Elrie Washington, Cynthia James, Melanie Thomas, and other family and friends. She is predeceased by four brothers, and three sisters, but she leaves a legacy of perseverance, and determination, for generations to come.
The family invites you to offer your condolences and share your stories during visiting hours on Saturday December 16th from 10:00am to 11:00am followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00am at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland ME 207-775-3763. Committal Service will follow at Forest City Cemetery in South Porltand.
