
Nathaniel N. Lord, 96 of Gorham passed away at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, Wednesday December 24, 2014. He was born April 5, 1918 in Newburyport, MA, son of the late George C. and Mary A. Lord. Nat grew up in Kennebunk and at Laudholm Farm in Wells, then attended Kennebunk schools and graduated from Governor Dummer Academy. He attended the University of Maine at Orono where he has been a member of the SAE fraternity since 1938. He served in the US Army from 1941-1945 where he spent time in Iran and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He then began his career with Southworth Machinery in Portland, then moved to Bangor where he was parts manager for the local Caterpillar dealer, Arnold Machinery. It was at Southworth where his met his wife Anna McKinley of Portland; they were later married on June 30, 1951 at St. Paul's Cathedral in Portland where she was a member. In 1960, Nat and Anna moved to Orono where they brought up their two children who were very important in their lives. Between 1960 and 1980 Nat was active in Indian guides, a ‘father and son” group and later was active in the Boy Scout Troop 47 in Orono. He and his wife Anna regularly attended St James Episcopal Church in Old Town. They moved to Hollis in 1984 where they attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Waterboro for over 25 years. Nat enjoyed many summers at the family estate at Laudholm Farms in Wells, Maine and he maintained a residence there throughout his life. In June 2011, Anna and Nat celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary together with family and were reacquainted with many friends at a gathering in Gorham.
Nat is survived by his two sons: Christopher Lord and his wife Christine of Gorham, and Jeffrey Lord of Cape Elizabeth; four grandchildren: Adam, Timothy, Benjamin, and Rebecca Lord. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. His children are grateful to their father who devoted much effort to caring for their mother which allowed her to remain in her home until her last days.
A private celebration of Nat's life will be held on August 25th in Gorham at the convenience of his family.
