

Falmouth - Nicholas G. Davis, Jr., 93, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Falmouth by the Sea in Falmouth, ME. Before moving to Falmouth last July, he was a long-time resident of Westbrook, ME. He was born in Portland, ME on April 22, 1922, the son of the late Nicholas G. and Catherine Joyce Davis. Nick was very proud of his Greek/Irish heritage. He graduated from Portland High School and worked for a while in his father’s tailor shop in Portland. For many years he was employed in the trucking industry and retired from Sanborn’s Motor Express in Scarborough, ME in 1984.
Nick was a decorated World War II veteran. During the war, he was stationed at Buckingham Aerial Gunnery School in Fort Myers, FL, where he taught soldiers how to shoot.
Nick enjoyed spending time with his family, reading history books, watching football, working in his yard and traveling when he had the time. As a younger man, he enjoyed hiking, fishing and swimming. When very young, he hiked in the White Mountains with friends during the winter.
Nick was predeceased by his first wife, Florence Drinkwater Towle Davis, to whom he was married for almost 40 years; by two sisters, Helen Davis Hages Nason of New Hampshire and Dorothea Davis Banks of California; and two brothers, George Davis and Walter Davis, both of New Hampshire.
Nick is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Virginia Cates Chadbourne Davis; his sister, Mary Davis Harmon of Keizer, OR; his daughter, Lucy Towle Spence (Warren) of Clarksboro, NJ; his son, Newton E. Towle III (Mary) of Yarmouth, ME; his daughter, Susan Davis Cummings (Glen) of Punta Gorda, FL; his daughter, Jane Davis Westlake (Craig) of Center Barnstead, NH; his daughter, Marilyn Davis Doucette (Howard) of Portland, ME; his son, Rev. Nicholas G. Davis, III (Rev. Mary Angela) of Ellsworth, ME; and his stepson, Brian Chadbourne (Leslie) of Portland, ME. He leaves 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Nick was good-natured, hard-working, devoted to his loved ones and had a great sense of humor. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
There are no visiting hours scheduled. A funeral service will be held Monday March 7, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. in the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland, Maine. A reception will follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory can be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online or at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
