She was brought up on a farm on Tannery Loop Road in Amherst, Maine. Pat attended local one-room schools in Eastbrook, Maine, until eighth grade. In 1969, she graduated from Ellsworth High School. She completed three summers at the Upward Bound Program at the University of Maine, Orono, from 1966 to 1969. Pat was first a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) at Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor, Maine. She completed the Licensed Practical Nursing certificate program at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Practical Nursing in Bangor in 1972. She completed two years of study at the University of Maine towards a BSN. She earned several certificates, including Medical Surgical, ACLS, Gerontological Nursing, and End of Life Care. Pats' nursing career spanned several decades before she retired from the South Portland Nursing Home in 2019. She worked at Mercy Hospital for 22 years, as well as at Cedars Nursing Care Center and St. Joseph’s Manor. Early in her career, she worked at Mount Desert Island Hospital, Bar Harbor, Maine, and North Miami General Hospital, North Miami, Florida.
After retiring, she stayed busy by volunteering. She looked forward to making cookies for The Hope Squad Maine to distribute weekly. She also enjoyed hours spent as a direct support volunteer with Hospice of Southern Maine. She also shared her faith with her community. As a long-time member of Woodfords Church, UCC, she knitted prayer shawls, wrote prayer letters, served meals at the Wayside Evening Soup Kitchen, and was a camp counselor at the UCC camp, Pilgrim Lodge. Pat’s faith was important to her, and she often expressed that she saw her God in the world around her. Especially when she was being still and mindful.
Pat loved her family and was the only one her family would allow to make holiday and birthday pies. Along with her family, Pat’s passions were great. She was an advocate for the elderly and was proud that she assisted in bringing Hospice of Southern Maine into The Cedars for end-of-life care. For this, the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aged presented her with the National Joan Ann McHugh Award for leadership in Long-Term Care.
Pat was a mentor and friend. She took great joy in mentoring nurses and CNAs. Even after she retired, she was seen making great connections with people who came into her life. She met people where they were at and loved them unconditionally.
Pat was an avid reader and often referred to her books as friends. She read early in life and carried this passion throughout her life. As she took great comfort in reading, she also loved and took comfort in creating her own works of art and self-expression. This could be seen in the neurographic art and the stories and poetry she wrote.
