

CAPE ELIZABETH - Phyllis M. Devou, 89, beloved wife of the late Floyd L. Devou Sr., died peacefully in her sleep, Jan. 13, 2018, with her family by her side. She had been a longtime resident of Cape Elizabeth.
Phyllis was born on Peaks Island, Maine, Feb. 20, 1928, the daughter of Percy W. and Pauline Hamilton, where she attended local schools. In 1998, Phyllis retired after 25 years, at almost the age of 70, as the star waitress at the Village Café in Portland. She had also waitressed at The Greymore hotel for 18 years. Phyllis always worked many hours for her greatest love, her family and providing for her five children.
She married Floyd L. Devou Sr. in 1946, who passed away in 2010, missing his presence every day.
Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was highly respected for her strong work ethic and was a pillar of strength to her family and friends. Her generosity and devotion to helping family, friends and anyone in need touched countless people. She was famous for her countless hours of rocking and watching old movies on TV.
Phyllis was predeceased by her beloved son, Floyd L. Devou Jr.; and her grandson, Floyd L. Devou III. She is survived by her four loving children, William, and his wife Linda, of Keene, N.H.; Gregory, and his wife Debi, of Ft. Myers, Fla.; Deborah, of South Portland; and Rhonda, and her husband Richard Boutin, of South Portland. She will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A special honorable mention to her grandson, William Roszka, and his wife Nicole, for their loving care and devotion to Nanny, which was indispensable and keeping her in her home.
Relatives and friends may call at the Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, on Thursday from 3-6 p.m. where a celebration of Phyllis's life will be held at 6 p.m. The Rev. Jeffrey McIlwain will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth.
