Prudence Margaret (Sullivan) Maloon, 67, of Westbrook, passed away on October 30 in Portland after a long fight with a progressive neurological disorder. Prudence was born on November 22, 1946, the daughter of James and Dorothy (Garrison) Foley. Her mother later married John Sullivan who adopted Dorothy's children. Thus Prudence Foley became Prudence Sullivan.
She graduated from Portland High School and was a legal secretary in Portland for several years. Prudence was then employed as an administrative assistant for several firms: Hague International in South Portland, then the Guy Gannett Publishing Company in Portland. During this time, 1n 1984, she received an AA degree from Westbrook College. She and her husband lived in Portland until 1984, then in Somerville and Malden in Massachusetts from 1984 until 2004. Prudence was an administrative assistant for Bentley Publishing and one other small firm before being employed by BayBank in Boston for 7 years. She resigned this position in order to further her education, and on September 1, 1996, Prudence received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Receiving this degree was a high point in Prudence's life, and she was justifiably very proud of this accomplishment. She was subsequently employed as an administrative assistant for Fidelity Investments in Boston, then in Merrimack, New Hampshire, until her retirement in 2009. She and her husband lived in Nashua, New Hampshire, from 2004 until 2013. They returned to the Portland area in 2013.
Prudence loved life and had many varied interests, including opera, classical, and folk music; attending concerts and live theater; watching British comedies on public TV; walking, hiking, birding, photography, genealogy, dining out, and visiting historic sites. She was also a great natural vegetarian cook. She loved travel by car to the Canadian Maritimes, Newfoundland, Montreal, and much of Maine, especially the midcoast area, Down East, Acadia, and Portland Head Light; and by train to New York City.
Prudence was a Big Sister in Maine in the early 80's. She was a volunteer English tutor in Everett, MA and in Nashua, and she volunteered at the Nashua Historical Society. She was an ardent environmentalist and belonged to several environmental organizations, among which were Maine Audubon Society, The Nature Conservancy, Environmental Defense, World Wildlife Fund, and Greenpeace. For several years, she participated in the American Heart Walk. She was also a supporter of humanitarian organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam America, and Union of Concerned Scientists.
Prudence is survived by her husband of 32 years, David Maloon, of Westbrook; two step-daughters, Erica Wilcox and her husband Ted, and Kami Lapointe of Gorham; two step-granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Wilcox; four sisters: Regina Fontaine of Old Orchard, Janine Sullivan and her husband Ron Boheim, of Walnut Creek, CA, Dorothy Sullivan of Augusta, and Sharon Abel of Windham, and two brothers: Rick Sullivan of Scarborough, and John Sullivan and his wife, Faith, of South Portland, and a step-brother, Peter Sullivan of Portland. She is also survived by her cousin Diana Pippin and her husband Frank of Auburn, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
