He was born in Portland Jan. 16, 1918, son of the late Jacob and Ruth Southall Shattuck, and attended local schools. Ralph toured the country as a young man, and returned to Portland during World War II. Unable to enlist in the military because of a prior illness, he went to work in the shipyards to serve as part of the "Greatest Generation."
He married his wife, Irene Beaudion (Turner) in 1951, and helped raise her three young sons. He worked for some time at Cushman Bakery, and later was employed by the State of Maine at the Maine Youth Center. Along with his wife, they became house parents at the Boys Training School in South Portland.
In his younger years, Ralph was the City of Portland Tennis Champion and was a scratch golfer when he belonged to Riverside Municipal Golf Course. He read the Portland Press Herald on a daily basis.
Besides his wife Irene, and his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, William B. Shattuck; three stepsons, Thacher Turner, Jeffrey Turner and Lance Turner; and daughter-in-law, Anna Rose (Turner) Burnham.
Ralph is survived by his grandchildren, Gregory Turner and his wife Veronica Helgans, Tia Stone and her husband Scott, Kurt Turner, Jeffrey Turner and his wife Lisa, Chantel Ruggaber and her husband Brian, and Kristen Turner.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Matthew Stone, Thacher Stone, Graham Turner, Isabel Turner, Tyler Turner, Brendan Ruggaber, Kyle Ruggaber, Alana Ruggaber, Sidney Turner, Ryan Turner, Alex Turner and Evan Turner; nieces, Paula Smithson and husband Bob, and Linda Archibald and husband John; daughters-in-law, Pauline Turner and Karen Turner; and special friends, Doreen and David Choate and Steve Smith.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Saturday, March 18, at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. The Rev. Philip Shearman will officiate.
