

Portland-Ruth Louise Hume died in Portland on 27 November 2010 in the company of her loving family following a brief illness. She was born Ruth Louise Richardson on July 6, 1921, in St. Stephen New Brunswick, to Hazen George Richardson, and Margaret Louise Forseyth Richardson. Ruth attended schools in The Deer Island town of Richardson, New Brunswick in Passamaquaddy Bay and in St. Stephen and graduated from St. Stephen School of Business. Ruth married Albert Webb Hume and they moved to Portland in the 1950's. She raised five children and participated in many local and community organizations. Ruth was a member of the Central Square Baptist Church where she was active for many years, and the Deering Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, where she served in many capacities including the position of Worthy Matron. Ruth served the community as a Cub Scout Den Mother for many years as well as a Brownie Leader. She was worked at Buchanan Furniture in St. Stephen, Bicknell Photo Service in Portland, and The Portland Public Schools.
Ruth is survived by four sons: David A. Hume of Severna Park, Maryland; Thomas M. Hume of Westbrook, Maine; Edwin P. Hume of Westbrook, Maine; John W. Hume of Portland, Maine; and a Daughter Margaret R. Richardson of Westbrook, Maine; ten grandchildren: Thomas Hume of Westbrook, Maine; Justin Hume of Westbrook, Maine; Joseph Hume of Westbrook, Maine; Michael Hume of Westbrook, Maine; Ashley Hume of Burlington Vermont; Andrew Hume of Billerica, Massachusetts; Matthew Hume of Portland, Maine; Joshua Hume of Portland Maine; Amy Richardson of Westbrook, Maine; and Nicole Richardson of Westbrook, Maine; a great grandson Connor Hume of Burlington, Vermont; three brothers Edwin Richardson of Ottawa, Ontario, Elmer Richardson of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and Vance Richardson of Elizabeth, Nova Scotia, and two sisters Mary Jean Lee of St. John, New Brunswick, and Grace Gendron of Ontario. Ruth was predeceased by her husband of fifty years Albert W. Hume, and her brothers William and Hazen (Maxwell) Richardson.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2010 at Jones, Rich, and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Central Square Baptist Church on Stevens Avenue, Portland to be followed by a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, and a reception at the Central Square Baptist Church. The Funeral Service will be preceded by the Order of Eastern Star Funeral Service at10:30 a.m. at Central Square Baptist Church.
