Portland - With profound sadness we announce the passing our devoted mother, Shirley L. Brooks, on March 12, 2020.

Shirley was born in Portland, Maine on November 15, 1935, to Edward and Mildred Pennell. She married the love of her life, Albert G. Brooks, and together they raised our family instilling strong values, a wonderful appreciation for laughter, and the value of generosity towards others. Our mom was devoted to her church and she loved all the many years she spent running the lunch program at Deering High School. She has touched many lives with her love and compassion for others. Most of all, our mom loved her family. She was welcomed in heaven on the 12th by her husband, Albert Brooks, her favorite child, Steven Brooks, her brothers Earl Pennell, Gregory Pennell, and Gary Pennell, and her sister Dian Segar. She is survived by her favorite child, Michael Brooks and his partner Barbara Durr, her favorite child, Scott Brooks and his wife Kelly Brooks, her favorite child Colleen Brooks Cunningham and her husband Jerald Cunningham, her daughter-in-Law Dian Brooks, as well as her brother Edward Pennell.

She was a cherished Mimi, Grammy and Mammy to Steven, Michelle, Samantha, Joey, Caitlyn, Matthew, Lauren and Jordan. She was blessed to also have 8 great grandchildren with her newest great granddaughter arriving in the upcoming week.

Our Mother was a beautiful, selfless woman who, through her example, taught us the meaning of unconditional love and allowed us all to be her true favorite!

The family invites you to a time of visitation on Thursday March 19th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday March 20th 11:00am at St. Joseph’s Church 695 Stevens Ave, Portland ME followed by Committal Services at Calvary Cemetery.

To the Shirley Brooks Family,
As a former principal of Deering High School and as a former teacher at Deering High School, we both fondly remember Shirley as a kind, hard working woman of great wit and devotion to her family, friends, colleagues and the entire DHS Community. Each school day she greeted us with smiles and encouraged us to enjoy a treat at her counter. She offered a bit of wisdom to our face paced, demanding days of working at Deering High School. We pray for you at this difficult time of such a great a loss. Shirley was truly a unique, special person, one of a kind who has left a lasting impression on us. She will always be kept in our thoughts.

Shirley was an icon at Deering High. She was much loved and respected for her hard work. Shirley had a kind word for all. She treated students with same respect as adults.
I visited her a year ago at her beautiful home and she still had a smile on her face and fond memories of her days at DHS.
I won’t be able to attend her funeral but my thoughts are with her much loved family. RIP dear Shirley.

Dear Michael, Scott, Colleen and Family.
My condolences on your mother's passing. I taught at Deering for 40 years and had the pleasure of knowing and seeing Shirley every day of my working life. She was a wonderful woman and was loved by her kitchen staff and the Deering faculty. She was kind, compassionate and had a great sense of humor! She will be sadly missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all!
