Shirley Doughty

Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on December 22, 1926, she was the eldest child of Augustus and Marjorie Merritt. She met her husband of 65 years, William, during a block party. They married on August 3, 1947, after Bill returned from World War II.

Bill and Shirley had three children: Bill the III, Susan Beth and Maryellen.

Shirley loved her work as a secretary and was a valued employee at places such as Mount Saint Mary College (NY), Manhattenville College (NY), and 100 State Street (ME). In recent years, she was a star volunteer at New England Women Center.

She loved her family and family gatherings gave her much enjoyment. Affectionately known as the “Queen Mom” and the “Director,” she took a special joy in organizing these events. She loved playing cards and dominoes, lunch dates with her best friends and any time spent with her family. In recent years, she also enjoyed family trips to Bar Harbor, ME.

She is survived by her husband, William, of Portland, ME; her son Bill, wife Susan Emily and their daughter Jessica of Portland, ME; her daughter Susan Beth, husband Eddy and their daughter Susha of Marlborough, CT; her daughter Maryellen and fiancé David of Turner, ME; her grandson Jonathan, wife Anne and their daughter Sophia of New Gloucester, ME; her grandson Daniel and wife Nichole of Glastonbury, CT; and her granddaughter Sharon, husband Steve and their son Luke of Portland, CT.

Family and friends are invited for a time of Visitation from 6-8 pm Tuesday August 28, 2012 at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland, ME. A Funeral Service will be held 11:30 am Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at Woodford's Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St. Portland with the Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House 11 Hunnewell Dr. Scarborough, ME 04074 or to the Woodford's Congregational Church.
