Stephen D. Johnson

November 28, 1957April 6, 2012

Portland – Stephen D. Johnson, known better to his family and friends simply as Steve, age 54, passed away April 5, following a lengthy struggle with cancer.

Born on November 27, 1957, Steve was the third child of Ward and Diane Johnson. While growing up, Steve and his family lived at various places around the country. After moving to Maine as a teenager he attended Fort Fairfield High School and University of Maine. He then moved to the Portland area where he lived until his passing.

Steve was a kind, thoughtful and intelligent man. He loved reading, was very artistic and was an exceptional photographer. Steve’s premier talent though was working with plants. If ever there was a person with a “green thumb” it was Steve. Any plants or flowers he touched flourished under his care. He loved tending his gardens and flower beds and was quite knowledgeable about botany in general.

Steve worked for many years as a florist but more recently has been employed by Hannaford Brothers.

Steve is survived by his long-term partner, Steven G. Duty. He is also survived by his parents, Ward and Diane Johnson of Bentonville, Arkansas; brother Pat and sister-in-law Sandy of Centerville, Massachusetts, sister Donna and brother-in-law Neal of Rogers, Arkansas, brother Michael of Boston, Massachusetts, brother Dave and sister-in-law Carrie of East Eddington, Maine, sister Kelly and brother-in-law Peter of Ashland, Massachusetts and brother Scott of San Francisco, California. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are to invited to attend a Memorial Service 11 am Saturday, April 14th , at Jones-Rich-Hutchins Funeral Home at 199 Woodford St in Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory can be made to: The American Cancer Society New England Division 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham Me. 04086

I knew Steve as a teenager in Albany, GA. He was a fun, loving, and beautiful person even then. My heart is saddened for the Johnson Family. Bretta Bow Quinones

I have just this past year been sending messages, back and forth with Steve. It was so nice sharing our lifes with each other, after all the year. Steve was a very nice guy I feel very blessed than I met him in this life. My heart goes out to his family. To his Mother and Father I would like to say I know that feeling of losing a child. God be with you all.
