

SCARBOROUGH -- Virginia Shanklin Camp (Ginny, Ginger), 83, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2014. She was born Virginia Evelyn Shanklin in Fork, Maryland, the fourth child of Claire and Stanley Shanklin, and graduated Towson (Maryland) High School in 1948. Ginny attended the University of Baltimore, where she graced the school with her poise and beauty, being voted Miss Kappa Sigma Kappa. She met her husband of 63 years, Wallace Earl Camp, Sr. (Wally), at university. They started dating while acting in a school play entitled “Boy Meets Girl,” married in 1951, and moved to Maine in 1955.
Ginny was the matriarch of the Camp family, providing strength and guidance to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ginny also gave of her time and many talents in support of her community, church and friends. She served as a member of the Women’s Board of the Maine Medical Center since 1974 and as its President from 1991 to 1993. Ginny worked for years in the Maine Medical Center’s Gift Shop, and also served a term as its Chairperson. She was an avid gardener, participating in the Cape Elizabeth Garden Club and tending to beautiful plants and flowers in and around her homes – Ginny especially enjoyed her seaside garden overlooking Broad Cove. Ginny was a longtime member of Woodford’s Congregational Church, where she served as lay minister and deacon, and a member of the First Congregational Church in Sarasota, Florida, since beginning to spend winters there with Wally in 1994. Ginny enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, knitting and spending time with her friends and family. She recently took up watercolor painting with her dear friends at the Center for Building Hope in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, who gave her strength, love and support. She and Wally also traveled widely, and formed many friendships along the way.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Wally, of Scarborough, Maine and University Park, Florida, the founder of the Rowe Dealerships; and five siblings: Roy Shanklin and his wife, Virginia, of Bel Air, Maryland; Ruth Ann Laatsch and her husband, Phil, of Glen Arm, Maryland; Marie Leimbach and her late husband, Jack, of Berwick, Pennsylvania; Robert Shanklin and his wife, Patricia, of Fulton, Maryland; and Thomas Shanklin and his wife, Jackie, of Pioneer, California.
Ginny also is survived by four children: Susan Hilton and her husband, Steve, of Scarborough, Maine; Janice Sweeney and her husband, Brian, of St. Paul, Minnesota; Wallace E. Camp, Jr. (the current President of the Rowe Dealerships) and his wife, Patti, of Falmouth, Maine; and Thomas M. Camp and his wife, Cynthia, of Weston, Massachusetts; nine grandchildren: Mark A. Camp and his wife, Maria, of Westbrook, Maine; Tracey Gibbs DiPietro and her husband, Chris, of Portland, Maine; Stacey Gibbs Pringle and her husband, Jay, of Bunnell, Florida; John Hilton of Portland, Maine; Katherine Hilton of Palo Alto, California; James Sweeney of St. Paul, Minnesota; and Alexander, Nikolas and Zachary Camp of Weston, Massachusetts; and by seven great grandchildren: Olivia Camp of Westbrook, Maine; Grace Hilton of Presque Isle, Maine; James and Ryan Pringle of Bunnell, Florida; Benjamin and Christopher Farley of Freeport, Maine; and Alexis DiPietro of Portland, Maine.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at 2:00 PM at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St, Portland, Maine. Ginny’s family will receive visitors immediately following the funeral service at Woodfords Congregational Church. Light refreshments will be served. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations in Ginny’s honor be sent to either of the following charities: Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route 1 #1, Scarborough, Maine 04074; or Cancer Community Center, 778 Main Street, South Portland, Maine 04106.
