Virginia (Ginny) Ray Hall Lott passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2014. Ginny was born in Portland, Maine, on January 14, 1921, to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hall (deceased). She later had one younger brother, Eddy Hall, who passed away some years ago. Ginny attended Portland schools and also studied at Gorham State Teachers’ College, receiving her degree in Education. She studied cello at an early age and was a member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra at the age of sixteen. She also studied piano and trumpet, plus accompanied her father as he taught trumpet.
A member of the military, Ginny was a Sergeant in Squadron B 200th at USAF Base Unit (Special) and was honorably discharged in Colorado Springs, CO, on March 2, 1947. While in the military, she met Robert (Bob) Lott and they married on February 26, 1951. She also taught English both in Japan and Vietnam while Bob was stationed in both locations. Ginny also taught in the United States, including the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where she and other educators developed and implemented Special Education programs at UMass for the benefit local schools.
Bob Lott fell ill, so Ginny retired from teaching and moved back to Portland where she resided at Bay View Terrace for many years. After Bob passed away, she began playing the piano again and later took organ lessons in order to accept a position as organist at a church in Kennebunk, ME. She also was a member of the Portland Organist Guild, played organ for the Christian Science Church in Kennebunk, and played piano for the Boy Singers of Maine, as well as local voice teacher, Olivia Hewett. In addition, Ginny sang with PSO at Merrill Auditorium for the Magic of Christmas show. She was also a long-time member of the Women’s Literary Union in Portland.
In her later years, Ginny resided at The Park Danforth (in Portland) and then moved to Falmouth by the Sea. She was happy and received wonderful and loving care from all of the staff at both facilities. Possessing a winning personality, bright smile, and infectious laugh, she made friends with whomever she met and wherever she went. She also brought joy and laughter to many people during her lifetime and will be greatly missed by all.
There are no services scheduled at this time. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Woodlawn Cemetery in Westbrook. On-line condolences can be given to the family at www.jonesrichandhutchins.com.
